BlockedI had an Engineer go to a customer today…. Lovely village, nice respectable homes, flash cars…… you know the type of place…. Engineer is in the 60 sq ft kitchen, diagnoses the fault and says…. ‘Mrs X, I will have to order a part for you, I will call the office now to order the part and we can make another appt for you’…….
Off the Engineer goes up the drive to get signal on his mobile…..
BANG! Door closes rapidly… The locks are on and the woman is shouting furiously.. 😮
Engineer is now 8O, so walks towards the door to be told to F off and get the part there and then… She says she will NOT let him have his tools untill he comes back with the part….
He says “but my keys are in there also, I cannot drive my van without my keys”…. Her response…. Not my problem sunny, just go get my part!
Anyway, from the driveway, he calls into office (now bare in mind it’s not the typical summer we’re used to, it’s raining like a mad January!) and tells me of the situation… I was 😯 ! Whilst he was on the phone, he says…”Bloody hell, she’s driving away” :?…………
Yep, she had slipped out of the back door, got into her car and gone 😕
Anyway, to cut a long story short, the Police turned up about 45Mins later, managed to get hold of the Husband who came flying home. My Engineer thaught…….. Ahh, all over… NOT!
Woman turned up also……. stood in doorway and denied acsess to her Husband and the Police….. 😯 😯 😯 , She argued so much with her husband, he threw his keys at her and with a not so nice gesture, got into his car and drove away…….. The Police were just about to arrest her for (My Engineer presumes a Public Order offense) when, like a switch, she let him get his tools, keys, peperwork etc and said she would ring the office to rebook the appointment. 😯 😯 😯
My thaughts on this,…… Bazaar! Something tells me to not go back to this customer again!

Wasn’t there a story years ago about a Hoover engineers van being taken hostage by an irate customer and being blocked in the drive? From what I remember it was the same problem, He had to order a part and she was having none of it. No problem if you are employed, Call the boss and let him sort it,But for the sole traders what a nightmare.

I thought that it was a National Homecare engineer,It was the same scenario though, except I think she had been let down on numerous call bookings or something .
Funny thing was after the story was all over the media ,the amount of people when being told their part would be ordered replied would it speed things up if I held you hostage ,To which my reply was unless the police can bring it with them ..no it won’t.

It was a Servis machine if my memory is correct.
I was once in the middle of a call, customer says, “just popping to the shops, only be 15 mins”. No problems, under g/tee I’ll lock up when finished.
Went out to get a part, door blew to behind me, all my tools in the kitchen.
Three hours later she returned, ” I bumped into an old school friend and we went for lunch”. 😈

I had that at Homecare…………….. 😮
Bloke locked me in over a fridge freezer, he went up stairs to call the office, whilst he was doing this, i took the glass out of his door (not by smashing either) as he had not long been broken into had not re-puttied the glass in so took all the sprig nails out and lifted out the pane.
My boss told me the bloke was amazed, I quote ‘The ba57ard has escaped’ 😆
Last one I rememeber, and made it to press, Customer had been let down by a certain contractor several times to have a facia panel fitted, by the time I got to it she was fuming, what made it worse was I didn’t have the part, she flipped, locked me in the utillity room.I tried Soooo hard to defuse the situation but she would not reason, it was all about her and what she wanted, so I went mad as I couldnt escape, she eventually let me out.
I felt bad in the end as I think it shook her up alot and I know she was frightened. 😳
I am happy to say I have done alot of growing up since then and calmed down.

Correct, 10 points! 😉
It was indeed a Hoover engineer that it happened to, IIRC in Wales (what is it with you lot? ;)), over a busted machine and the non-appearance of a free flight.
It made national news as the guy kept the van there for some time and started this trend. We had a few occurrences where it happened although they usually cave in when you point out that by holding the engineer against his or her will that you are actually committing a criminal offence and the next call that will be made is to the police.
The police don’t take too kindly to this IME.

This definitely happened in Cumbria too.

Nat Homecare covered my SUK area when I was in Cyprus 2000. I read it in the Mirror over there. I came home and had to sort it…her fault as machine was over a gully with a thin sheet of plywood to sit on and bounced everywhere. All sorted, lovely lady, just Homecare had 4 visits in a week. She got a free dryer from Whirlpool, an exchange Servis was on tv and radio and offered a job on a tv consumer programe.
Mrs Oberne in Charlton Mackrell near Yeovil.

Hi All
The last one that locked me in had a 2yr suspended sentence and a £200 fine.

surely you would be in your rights to kick the door in. and then bill them for a wasted call out if they wanted you back 😉 .
