ParticipantHi all,
Could appreciate some advice and good direction.
We was recently given a second hand Falcon Range cooker which as been in the house for 6 months and finally had it installed after having a kitchen renovation.
As soon as the electrician had connected the cooker up I turned the oven on. The fans began to work but as soon as I turned the temperature it immediately tripped the RCD.
The electrician said it was the appliance rather than what he had done.
I then rang an engineer who specialises in appliances and tested it only to discover that both heating elements on the grill didn’t work.
He then disconnected the elements and it worked fine. But then as soon as the elements where removed completely it started tripping again??
The engineer was baffled becuase everything was testing fine and the appliance was not tripping and then all of a sudden started too.
The problem is how much money do we throw at it and what could the problem be……
There was mice droppings so could the wires underneath them hob gave been chewed???
Appreciate the help and advice

Hi
We have visited a call with the exact same fault that you are describing and after quite a while we found that the electrical had just fitted a new consumer unit (fuse box) and had mis wired it. the electrician needs to double check that he has wired it to the correct circuit.

does the cooker switch have a socket on it
if yes plug something in, if it works cooker circuit wired ok
you say you have had it 6 months stored where ? Damp ?

Hi Bryan. We have had to have a new cooker supply which is 40amp that is going into the fuse board.
The fuse itself originally fed a shower which has been replaced with one direct from a boiler.
The old cooker is all gas hence why we had a completely new supply

ok you say the engineer disconnected the grill element and it was ok but when he took the elements out of the cooker completely it started to trip again ( I assume he insulated the wires)
you also say initially you tried the oven and it tripped. I am assuming you where talking about the fan oven which normally does not use the grill elements to heat up and uses a separate circular element. my focus would be on this one.you problem most likely is element problems. considering the price of these cookers if it only needs a few elements it should be ok. make sure the elements that are fitted are good quality as the cheaper replacement elements are really quite poor these days but are still supplied because some engineers want to make a bigger profit at the expense of reliability

It tripped out whilst switching both grill and oven on. The other elements have been tested and are ok. Just seems odd to why it worked ok after the grill elements where disconnected and then all of a sudden it tripped again.
I know there are 2 elements next to the fan but is there anymore hidden away

disconnect all the elements. insulate the wires and turn on and see if it trips then
if no re introduce the elements one at a time

Hi
Connect the cooker into a normal plug socket and only turn on ONE function at a time.If it doesn’t trip then is the wiring.

The isolation switch has a single socket on which appears to be fine when using a kettle. It doesn’t trip. Am I right in assuming it’s the cooker?
I will carry out what Dave has said about disconnecting all of the elements and insulating it

you can be reasonably confident circuit is ok
so go with disconnect elements and take it from there.

hive had one of these and it turned out to be the bottom element that had low insulation

its quite common for lower element to fail. I am assume its because most people use fan option and not the convection oven so lower element absorbs moisture through lack of use

When the engineer tested it, it was showing that the other elements where ok though? Or is it possible for them to trip when turning the temperature up

in a word yes
also depends how he tested them. with a 9volt multimeter or a 500v insulation tester
miltimeters are a good guide but cant rely on them entirely for earth faults
