ParticipantHello All
I have read the below pasted posts with interest and would be appreciative for more of your help and guidance!!
I believe I have a very similar problem to slytrellis “Samsung Side by side fridge freezer problem slytrellis” Posted: Fri Jan 13, 2006 7:29 pm
I have a Samsung Side by Side Fridge-Freezer Model No. RS21FGRS. It was bought unfortunately 7/10/2003 – so is 2.5 years old. This model has ice and chilled water dispensers activated by levers and a bottle hatch – small door in fridge door.
My fault symptoms are the fridge has started to emit strange noises from inside the fridge, sounds like a fan or something like that and does come to a gradual stop when either door (main or milk/bottle hatch) are opened. I have read some posts that indicated that it may need a full defrost – is this just the fridge you defrost? I did look behind the two trays last night and found a small amount of ice forming between top tray and back panel, I’ve removed that and now the Temperature is showing 11c and when I change it to 3 or 2c changes back to 11c ( Temp. inside fridge though does seem OK)? I have switched the unit off and then back on and the digital display instantly showed a Temp. of 3c then changed to 11c? – Is there a reset setting at all?Do you think the forum could guide me through fault diagnostics?
So any suggestions, I’m keen to try and fix it myself as I’m currently unemployed and we don’t really have any cash right now especially for a New Fridge freezer!!!! Thanks again – Simon – hcr.hip@googlemail.com

If the noise you had was a grinding noise from the fridge and when the fridge door was opened the noise stopped it will be the Phlenim(rear poly block behind water tank)common fault.Samsung have now upgradded the material.I always change the Phlenim and evaportor sensor.Worth doing and should not cost that much unless there is a heater/sensor or thermal fuse fault. You get a 2 year warrenty with samsung

yes it is the part the fan is mounted to. If you pull out the bottom 2 drawers you will see the cover (and if close enough 2 screw holes where the water tan k affixs-yours doesnt have the tank as you say but its the same plenheim.)

Hi,

The noise did stop when the fridge door was opened. When you say “water tank” what do you mean. This model doesn’t have water/ice dispenser.
Is the “Phlenim” the rear panel on the insidr of the fridge with the fan mounted on the back of it?
Also, do you supply spares for these as I have been unbable to findanyone who can. If you can how much would a Phlenim and evap sensor cost?
Unfortunately the unit is about 2 1/2 years old and out of warranty.slytrellis Posted: Sun Mar 19, 2006 9:54 am

Well everyone, just thought I needed to update everyone. Having sent several letters to Samsung regarding the excessive cost of repairs on a fridge that was only 3 months out of warranty, they finally gave in and agreed a free of charge repair….. only after i threatened to go to BBC watchdog program about the problem… so after 4 Expert App visits, 3 sensors, 2 phlenims and a defrost heater and about 5 hours of labour everything is working!!

KeymasterHi Simon,
There’s no easy answers I’m afraid here as theses Samsung machines tend not to be so easy fora DIY fix.
You will need to totally defrost the entire machine toclear any ice blockage, but if it returns I’d strongly advise you get an engineer in as it could be various things causing the problem.

Hi help me
the fault will definetly within the defrost circuit, also there may well be that the carbon filters may be missing from the fridge section which will also cause this problem.to be honest you will need an experienced engineer to repair this item as a lot of engineers dont like the back up from samsung.
where are you ?

Bryan
I’m in West Sussex,
Earlier today I undid the 4 screws that are for the panel that says twin cool on it and that also has the fan in it – All frosted up behind panel, so I thought rather than defrost whole fridge / freezer again, I would see if by having panel loose if this will alow the ice to melt???
Obviously this has stoped noice from fan but any ideas what this is / could be doing long term and not sure about real fix?
Thanks to all

help me, as bryan has said, the fault lies somewhere in the defrost circuit.
the evaporator is frozen up, this proves this.
the evaporator needs to be free from ice to provide the airflow upon which the fridge is dependant.
a temporary fix would be to completely defrost.
you would need the back panel in place to channel the airflow.
it really does sound like you need an engineer.
cheers.

Not true what carbon filters? this unit has deoderisers that have no effect on the running if the machine, other than that there are no filters.
There has been known to be a few faulty plenheims (the whole big plastic/polystrene bit you removed that holds the fan) dear to replace mind. Or the heaters are not coming on. could be blown thermal fuse i.e heaters got a little too hot. OR faulty heater OR faulty sensors. All can be eliminated by an engineer.
