Hi there. I have an Admiral top loading washing machine. Model no. LATA401AGE. It is from the 1990’s and I have had no problems with it until recently. Sometimes the motor works and sometimes it grinds to a halt and just makes a buzzing sound.
    Do I need a new motor ?

Honestly I doubt it’ll make much odds what you need as all parts for that will be obsolete now unless any can be sourced from the USA.

Indeed 🙂 Parts for your model here from Parts advantage USA.

Some are now obsolete while other parts are apply for price etc.

judging by the wiring diagram the motor itself appears to be a split phase type ( not capacitor run ) so I would doubt it is the motor itself at fault and more likely to be a transmission problem but of course it is really impossible to say.

some of these motors had a centrifugal switch ( see item on the base diagram on the link don put up)
these switches have contacts and a lot of the American ones can be opened

open and check contacts because if the contacts don’t close when the motor stops it just buzzes because it has no start winding
