ParticipantMy electricity energy bill was 3x the normal for a 3month period. I checked my energy use and the bill was correct. An electrician tested my appliances in the house and found that it was my washing machine that was causing the excessive energy use. I was wondering if there was any tests or repairs i can do on my washing machine or would i just need to buy a new one? thanks.

I would dearly love to hear how a washing machine can cause that.
Methinks you may have been misled.

By plugging in an energy monitor to your washing machine you can see exactly how much power it consumes and how much money it is costing you to run. (Readily available from Amazon, Maplins and other good stores)

Yes martin that is what the electrician plugged into the washing machine and all the other appliances in the house and he said it was the washing machine that was causing the excessive energy use. We stopped using it and monitored how much kw/hr usage we were using and it was a lot less than when we were using it, should i just buy a new one?

Does the machine seem to take a long time to go through cycle (longer than normal )

A washing machine uses normally around 2kw on the heating phase and depending if it’s 3 phase motor or not another 1-1.7kw on spin. A full duration usage of a standard 40 degree wash can be in the region of 2kw per cycle or 30p in money. if your doing multiple loads a day you could easily spend £1.50 a day. You will notice £45 a month on your bill.
It’s almost impossible it’s using more energy than it’s designed to. Short of it boiling every wash it’s very unlikely. Did he give you any figures ?
Most of the guys will agree we tend to take what a sparky says with a pinch of salt. Most just don’t understand appliances. A washer is easily one of the most expensive items to run in the home next to a tumble drier.
Also it’s not a washer drier is it ?

Its a hot point aquarius wml720 its used once/twice a day has been for the last 2 year or more and sometimes just on a quick wash if the washings not to dirty. It doesnt seem like its taking any longer than it usually does on a cycle. Ive had the same washing machine for just over 2 years now and the excessive electricity started about 6-7 month ago and my bill has trebled just on the electricity.

It’s not the washing machine.

Your next door neighbour has hooked up to your supply to keep his cannabis plants warm during the cold winter months maybe?

Make sure your immersion heater hasn’t been accidentally switched on… (Airing cupboard normally)

Participantfaulty washing machine causing excessive electricity use.
As K said not the machine, you want to get that spark back and do a proper investigation. Hope he did not charge you ?
Look at what has changed in that time period ? Anything new installed ? Underfloor heating anywhere in the house ? Immersion as has been said ? New electric shower installed ?
Are you working from home now ? Anything in the Garage on ?
Think of all the possibilities, Consider getting an energy monitor and hooking that up.
If your bill has trebled we are talking a substantial amount of consumption.
