ParticipantHaving a problem with my Hotpoint FF80 Mistral fridge freezer.
Have looked on forum and have cleaned out all of the rubbish, dust fluff etc from the from and back as guided.
Question is, now that I have restarted the freezer, the temps seem to be falling, compressor is working and the fan in the freezer is functioning.
Question is – the compressor seems to be getting quite hot and I was wondering when the fan next to it should start to kick in?
Have checked inline fuse and that seems ok – how can I test whether motor is working correctly?
All help greatly received
Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,
Unless any of the guys know anything I don’t (quirky stuff) about these fridge freezers then it sounds as if the compressor has failed.
There’s not really a way to test them without specialist equipment.

If the compressor is REALLY hot ie. you can’t keep your hand on it for more that a couple of seconts it could well be a “poor pumper” and will need to be replaced. But thats assuming that it hasn’t just lost gas.Id get a fridge expert to have a look at it.HTH

Thanks for responding so quickly.
The temperature has been coming down all night with the freezer now at -15 and fridge at +10. Compressor is however very hot (too hot to keep hand on) and there appears to be no sign of the fan next to it coming on.
What is this fan for – is it not to cool the lower area of the unit including the compressor?
Thanks

It’s to cool the compressor.
If it’s not running and the compressor isn’t being cooled properly… well, think on it this way… it’s the same idea as the radiator fan in your car. It’ll end badly if it’s not working.

Thanks for that K
Update this morning is that the freezer is now down to -20 fridge +5. Compressor working again this morning but still appears to be no sign of the fan coming on.
Can I ask why you feel compressor is on the way out? If the fan was coming on would this not correct temp problem with compressor?
Also when you say ‘it’ll end badly’ what did you meant?
Thanks again for all the help

If the compressor is allowed to overheat then it will sieze and become inoperative. This is more likely to happen as the ambient temperature increases with the warmer weather and the run times are extended.
