An excellent idea was suggested to me last night to start reclaiming some of the ground lost over the years in this trade, there are more to come but here’s a couple of thoughts for you all.

A “slush” fund created under the UKW banner for any UKW member that donates to enable the analysis of any potential contract by a contracts solicitor. We’re not talking a lot of money here and it’s, to my mind, a very worthwhile investment for all it would cost if we banded together collectively. We reckon about £5 to £10 month at most for the service.

The potential savings from such a move could be immense over time. However, the point of owning a weapon is not to use it, it’s only a detterent so that everyone in the industry realises that any potential contract may well come under the close scrutiny of an expert in the field. Hopefully this will see an end to some unfair and restrictive conditions being placed upon us. 😈

The other one, that a lot of us have discussed in past, is getting in place some kind of insurance to protect us against any litigation from a UKW angle as well as on a per-business basis. Again, I don’t think we’re looking at any significant sums of money if there is enough interest in it. The previous paragragh also applies to this.

Both would be run on a not-for-profit basis, this is purely to benefit the trade and improve all our lots in life, not to try to make money from it!

Obviously both will be up for discussion at the UKW meeting next month as well as some other bits and bobs. And, if there’s any more ideas and suggestions please feel free to put them forward. 😉

Why not look into the possibilty of insuring yourselves against a Manufacturer or WP going out of business leaving you with unpaid invoices.

It may be possible to do this under one banner or if not it would have to be done individually, I am not sure. But worth investigating.

The benefit of this is you will know the credit worthiness of the companies that give you work. The Powerhouse senario comes to mind where it was known that their credit rating was £0 weeks before they went down. You would at least know in advance and be able to make decisions about continuing to work for a company before the debt becomes too damaging.

If insurance is out of the question how about a slush fund to pay for regular credit references of your WPs. It doesn’t cost much to do a search.

There is also that possibility Richard and some damn fine suggestions they are too.

I’d lay odds that none of us carry out any form of credit checking at all or carry any insurance against bad debts. You’re dead right though, it could well be a useful addition for all of us.

I’m more than happy to expand on this if there’s the interest to do so.

Don’t forget that any contract that is unfair and unreasonable can be deemed invalid in UK law even if someone has signed it.

One of the first things that work providers ask us to prove before they give us any work is for annual copies of our public liability insurance.
Should we not ask them to show us proof of a policy that they pay for to cover any bad debts that they are responsible for should they go bust.

    Just a thought 😉

And a very valid one as well Del IMO. I have heard recently the case of a WP charging back calls to agents when they had no indemnity insurance for that particular contract.

    Shameful really 😡
