KeymasterG’day,
My 10 year old Fisher and Paykel GW701 has an intermitent fault where it fails at the final spin, beeping and displaying the “short wash” light. The machine appears to only be partially pumping out during the rinse and spin cycles, then stopping for a while, then sometimes pumping again or stopping.
Any thoughts?

If it’s the 4 minute led, this indicates wiring and connections being at fault. If it’s the 6 minute led, this is a mechanical fault – from your description of poor draining you need to investigate the pump area for function, blockages etc as a starting point.
Safety first – power off please.

Thanks for the info about the F&P’s in the forums.
The machine (GW701) faults to the 2min “short wash” not the four or six as per earlier email. What does this mean?
I have put the machine in diagnostic mode (hold down low temp and power on) All lights display and then only the spin light comes on. I can toggle on the hot and cold fill valves and the pump. The machine seems to pump out fine in diagnostic mode (can pump out completely) but is not completely pumping out in the rinse and spin cycles. Any ideas where to go next?

ParticipantPost your email of fax no. and I’ll send you the diagnostics then based on the fault code I’ll send you the fault readout

G’day Alexa,
Thanks for your help
My email is matthew.stocks@originenergy.com.au.
When in daignistic mode the fill level buttons appear to have a function (the low and medium level lights toggle on and off) but I do not know what it is. The water level toggles the valves, regular wash toggles the pumps and the lid open/out of balance switches. Is there anything to check the water level? Any other checks that can be made from diagnostic mode?
Cheers

To Matt Stocks
I have emailed you the diagnostics

I have run the diagnostic mode. The last error code is 8 i.e. only light on is the furthest right of the 5 wash lights (“short wash”).
00001000
What does this code mean?

Hi Matt, sorry for the delay – forgot that Alexa has buzzed off for a week. This code tells us that the display module has failed due to a processor start-up error. It may boot up if the power is cut at the wall for about 5 seconds, but equally well, may not.

Thanks for the extra info.
This error doesn’t make sense to me – I must be using the wrong logic 🙂
Is the fault likely to be in the control module or the display module?I have used the machine for about 10 loads limping it through the sequence. It only faults during the pump out phase of the cycles. Pumping out for a while then stopping, pumping out then stopping, few cycles then going to error (consistently error code 8 00001000) . I can step it through to any wash stage (wash/rinse/final rinse/spin) and it is fine as long as I have pumped out through the diagnostic override first.
There is signs of burnt out resistors in the high voltage area in the control module (can’t identify cause) so I guess I’ll replace the control module (and the pump given its age) and hope that it isn’t going to just blow again.
Cheers

ParticipantA most unusual fault
Do you have the spin speed slow and hold LED’s ON when you are are reading this fault code
As per Penguin 45 this fault code indicates the fault would be in the display module.
Turning the machine off at the wall and waiting >5 seconds could reset this problem or a replacement of the Display Module is indicated
Did you run tests “8.2” & “8.3”
Did the pump run continuously without fail until turned off
A five minute pump test would be ample in case the pump is failing on overheat which would occur in less than five minutes.
The pump on overheat would need a similiar time to cool down before it will work again if overheating is the problem
Also did the valves let water in until you released the button.
Did your “Out of Balance” switch test OK
You could test the values of those resistors in circuit in the power module to prove/disprove their integrity, but again the fault code readout you posted indicates the other module is at fault.
Having been able to run the machine with it having pumped out indicates a different failure.
Never disassemble a machine and work on it with the power on.
