ParticipantHi – our Fisher & Paykel has twice caused the RCD device in the consumer unit to trip out. Taking the appliance plug out allows power restore to the house.
The first time this happened (3 months ago) my wife , thinking the problem was with the socket reconnected the fridge to another socket and it worked. I subsequently put it back to its original socket. Conclusion-nothing to do with the socket but hey it works.
It broke down again this weekend. I got an engineer out who concluded there was an earthing problem but didn’t have the tools to take it apart. This morning I switched it back on and hey presto it’s working.
I was wondering if this is an auto defrost problem? and whats the best way of going about fixing it? I don’t want to waste engineers time calling them out on an elusive problem.
Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry I can’t help but would advise that we have exactly the same problem with our Scandinova frost free fridge freezer. It tripped the power supply, was seemingly OK again after 48 hours or so but has now tripped the consumer unit again. Our refrigeration engineer has advised (by phone) that it will undoubtedly be a compressor problem at approx £200 to replace.
I too would appreciate any comments. Many thanks.

Hi Robin,
If you can locate a pukka F&P agent they should have a plug in for their laptop that will give the details of the failure, or at least a record of what was happening when it failed. Those are obviouisly not available to the general public and, even if they were, they’d likely be too expensive.
It does sound like a defrost problem though.
As for the Scandinova I’m afraid that they’re a little less complex. It could be the compressor or something in the defrost circuit that’s at fault. I suspect that your refrigeration engineer is likely giving you the worst case scenario.

Hi -thanks for the feedback. F&P routes its servicing through Eastern Domestics. I’ve made the call. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Helpful guy from Eastern Domestics. Tested all componenets and all satisfactory! Inconclusive I’m afraid. Anyone got any further ideas?
