ParticipantMy F&P is 14 years old. Yesterday I changed the OOB switch and noticed that when I manually turned the drum it is stiff and made a noise that sounded like a piece of cardboard flapping on the spokes of a bicycle wheel. The drum did not turn smoothly but had increase resistance (jerky) that concided with the flapping noise. The machine “works” normally. I cannot remember hearing this noise before. Is this noise normal?

Moved your post to the dedicated, Down Under forum. 😉
No doubt one of the F&P experts will be along to answer your question soon.

The drum will not turn freely due to the rotor moving past the magnetic fields of the stator – it should feel like it’s “pulsing” gently with light resistance. If you are actually getting noise, I would check that the rotor is fully secured by it’s central nut and also to its reinforcing plates. If the rotor is clipping the stator, major damage could quickly ensue.

If you changed the out of balance switch is the lever rubbing on the bowl?

Checked all that I could. The rotor is not contacting the stator and the oob arm only contacts the outside of the bowl enclosure when it is out of balance. How do I remove the top panel to remove the inner rotating drum? or is there another way to check how secure the rotor is attached to its reinforcing plate. Removing the agitator does not show anything. The noise is only there when the inner drum is rotated manually. It seems to operate normally and quieter under power.
Thanks for all the advice offered.

You won’t have to remove the top deck. The rotor and stator make up the motor, which is bolted to the bottom of the tub – access from underneath.
Power off first – the pump is live if the machine is plugged in.
