ParticipantI recently had the defrost heater replaced on my F&P Inox. The fan in the unit has always been very quiet, so much so that when the engineer came to replace the heater, he commented that he couldn’t hear the fan and had to simulate the door being closed and stick his head in the fridge to actually hear it.
Two days after the heater was replaced, the fan is suddenly unbearably noisy – sounds like a jet engine starting up/shutting down when you open/close the door.
So, any views as to whether this is a) related fault, b)unrelated fault triggered by the engineer c)new fault that has occurred coincidentally 2 days after the other fault was repaired.
Comments appreciated as I’ve already had a hefty repair bill and not sure what to do next! Many thanks

Fan motor may have lost a blade. Depending on how old it is the later models had a superior motor and a beter suspension setup. If its an earlier model you can upgrade the FC fan assy to current specs.
Motor is 12volts DC.December 7, 2007 at 12:55 pm #236200Pommy

Thank you both. Appliance is currently running at 76db!!
It’s 5 years old. I’m just wary that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the fan until the day after the heater was replaced. It’s the model with the freezer at the bottom (E522B). Where is the fan? I’ve noticed the back panel of the freezer compartment has not been replaced properly as it sticks out on one side.
Would the engineer need to remove the back panel of the fridge in order to replace the defrost heater? (I mean, I know this went behind the freezer panel, but after he had said he had finished replacing it, he then decided to take everything out of my fridge, as an afterthought, to “check” something.)

Great diagnosis, Expercat! We took the back panel off as it hadn’t been refitted properly anyway. There was a wire trapped between the blades. There were a couple of wires that hadn’t been clipped back into their housing, so we reseated those, and all is working perfectly. The only problem is that the blade appears to have started cutting through the sheathing on the wire.
I’ll phone the repair company to report – at least, thanks to you, we don’t need to pay another £45 callout to look at the noisy fan.
Thanks for your help.
