ParticipantHi all,
Recently acquired an old smart drive 053 from a friend going over seas the friend occasionally experienced the problem I am experiencing which is that the washer turns on fine and allows the selection of any options but once the start button is pressed nothing happens the machine just beeps. He said that he would give it a kick or lift it up and down a little and then it would work.
My initial suspicion would be one of the sensors is playing up out of balance or lid closed or similar.
I tried the diagnostic mode as described in the sticky, but it seems the result is different to what I should expect.
Heres what I did:
Turn on by holding down wash temp and power
All the lights on machine turn on and stay that way for a few seconds. Machine does NOT beep twice.
Machine now displays Water Level Low and High lights lit
Push spin speed up button until hold and slow are illuminated.
Wash process shows no lights lit.
If I now press start
Spin light comes on (does that mean fault 128???)If I now instead press advance the lights are lit as follows:
0100 0100 water level L
If I press start the spin light is also illuminated and the machine beeps.
0100 0101.Any pointers would be appreciated I am considering shorting the lid closed and balance sensors to see if they are the problem but if someone has more insight that would be appreciated.

When you press the start button in diagnostic mode the spin light will flash. At this time the data recorded in the processor memory can be downloaded to a computer or Windows mobile pocket computer. (clever eh). Gives you the last 4 faults, total washes completed and user faults that do not appear in diagnostic mode.
Suggest you replace the reed switch (magnetic lid switch)
They are not expensive and quite easy to replace. Would not advise shorting it out as this could be a little dangerous for kids etc.January 4, 2008 at 12:25 pm #238486kiwireeferman

Forgot to mention, if you replace the lid switch make sure you push the wiring hard up under the top deck in the retainers. If wiring is allowed to hang down it will chaffe on the cabinet and blow the motor controller.

Thanks kiwireeferman,
I have just shorted the switch for now and will look at replacing it soon. No kids in the house so no great danger I think.
Washer seems to be working fine now! Just on a test wash now so fingers crossed it will work fine.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there… I had exactly the same problem as you around the same time with the same model. Diagnostics the same also.
Could you let me know how to short the lid switch? Also have no kids around.

Join the wires together. This is a “Test Only” solution – if the machine functions, replace component at the earliest opportunity.
You know it makes sense………….

Thanks for your help… I did the switch last night and ran it through a cycle fine, so that problem solved… new switch on the way. Always impresses the rest of the household when the woman doing the washing fixes her own machine!!
