Fisher & Paykel MW511 top loader.

Hi

I have returned to the UK from New Zealand, and decided to bring back with me my F&P MW511 top loader. Plumbed it in today without issue and set it going with it’s first load. Then it starts beeping at me, I remember that this beep was due to it not liking the load either it being to much or not balanced properly, so I move the load around and set it going again. Not 5 mins later beeps again, so I remove some items, off it goes again another 5 mins and beeps yet again. I remove more items until there’s barely half a load in the drum, and i’m thinking surely it can handle this amount…but no, again it beeps. What do I have to do to get this machine to stop beeping at me and leave me in peace while it does a wash? Please help i’m going mad here nursing it through washes…. 🙁

If it’s beeping, you should have lights on as well….. make a note of what you’ve got, then run diagnostics as per sticky at top of forum.

I’m sorry can you just explain what I need to do, sorry to be a pain. I understand that I need to run a diagnostics check, and I understand that the lights on the panel will let me know whats going on, but it’s finding the ‘sticky’ and knowing what it’s saying to me….?!?!?

If that is a picture of the lights in diagnostic mode, you have code 160 (128 + 32 lit). This is an overload on the motor, when it tries to agitate the drum. The inner drum should float off a set of teeth on the drive shaft, allowing the paddle to turn inside it. With the machine empty, try to lift and rotate the inner drum. It should lift easily and turn with little resistance. If it doesn’t, you may have something caught around the shaft, the teeth may be caked with old soap, or something may be caught between the drum and the paddle.

If it it lifts and turns, you need to check the condition of the inner drum for cracks or holes. The bottom acts as an air bell, trapping air in order to float the drum.

A learned colleague from down under has also suggested that you double check that hot and cold supplies are the right way round!

I had a look at the washing machine after your suggestions, and I couldn’t find anything untoward. The drum spins as freely as I would expect, there seems a slight resistance, as if there are what feels like rubber teeth gripping the axle, but it’s hard to know if this is correct due to the fact that I have never perfomed this operation. All other movement (up/down/left/right) of the drum seems uninhibited.

I checked the hot and cold feeds and they are the correct way round.

What I did find interesting however was the fact that the diagnostic LED check has turned up a new result, please follow link to view.

With machine empty…….

When the drum is in the down position and you turn it, it should have a heavy feel to it as you are turning the rather massive rotor on the motor. If you then pull the drum upwards, you should disengage from the motor drive and the drum should turn easily.

The new fault shown is 38 – the machine thinks it’s empty when it should be full. Most likely culprit is that the air hose to the level switch has come adrift. If you’ve hauled this half way round the world, I imagine that the drum has rattled around every which way, so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise.

With the power off, remove the two screws on the back of the console housing and the entire top deck should lift away with a bit of a wiggle. There should be a skinny plastic tube running up the inside of the machine, this should be connected to the level switch in the console housing.

See how you go……

Ok, I did what you suggested and took off the panel. I have put pics of the inards of it on photobucket with links below. To the untrained eye however it doesn’t appear that anything is out of place under there. I believe I located the skinny plastic pipe you mentioned and it appears attached at the top end.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the blades do not seem to want to agitate anymore, infact I haven’t seen them do it and my wife has seen them struggle to do it only once, this does seem to tie in with there being a problem with the rotor or motor?!?!?

Just a quick thought Andy – the machine isn’t syphoning is it? If the drain hose end is below the water level in the machine, it’ll steadily lose water.

You know what, I think the drain hose would be lower than the water level. As we kind of cobbled a space for the machine as we’ve just moved in, I pushed the length of the hose down into the upstand of the waste pipe, making it easily lower than the water level in the machine.

I’ll try pulling it out and and try it.
