ParticipantWe have a similar fault on our 051 as earlier described here:
“The machine gets through the wash cycle ok, although it is making a horrible noise each time it rotates, a grinding noise. But it is still working. But when it comes to the spin cycle it either stops and beeps repetitively with one light on, or it just goes into and completes its spin cycle without actually spinning. Instead it just rotates back and forth like it does in a wash cycle.”

I have only discovered this forum, so will do the checks already given in the other thread. Unfortunately, the other thread finishes without the conclusion – was it a happy ending?
Ours is a little different – no “horrible grinding noise” and the diagnostic lamps are 10001000 (with “hold” & “slow” lamps lit simultaneously, also “water level” lamps “high” and “low” both lit).
And two other queries:
Could some kind soul please email me a listing of the 051 error codes and what they mean? (geoff.williams@arpansa.gov.au)
And one of the responses on the other thread said:
“…Remove the screws (3) holding the creme cover on the inside base of the inner bowl and check the spline. There is a stainless ring on the underside of this, make sure it doesn’t look worn.”
I checked and cleaned the whole thing out last weekend, so there’s nothing dropped in the innards. But noticed that the stainless ring (mentioned above) on the underside was darkened in parts. Could this be the source of the problem? Corrosion? Is a clean in order, or replace it?What might be the absolute worst diagnosis (can the motor give up the ghost?), and in what circumstances is it not worth fixing but we should be buying a new one? (the blue control electronics was replaced fairly recently).
Really grateful, Geoff

10001000 is the computer telling you that the motor will not run. Repeatedly. So – drum should be free to turn when the machine is off. It shouldn’t drag or rumble.
More likely is that there is a wiring fault with the motor, position sensor or the star poit (where the coils join together). Corrosion, broken and chaffed wires are all possible.
If all the above checks out, the motor controller is probably the culprit.

Penguin45, thank you!
You said “drum should be free to turn when the machine is off. It shouldn’t drag or rumble.” It’s hard for me to know exactly what it was like when it was all working fine, but now it defintely seems to be like you say – hard to turn, rumbling, clunky.
What does that mean? (i’d guess bearing or something??) Is it time to hit the stores? Do you recommend getting the equivalent F&P replacement? (been very happy with the 051)
BTW, if they give out imperial honours in the Soviet Republic of Yorkshire, I’d like to recommend you for one! Cheers & thanks again.

Drum bearings, Geoff. Seal at the top, two ball bearings below. If you drag the machine out, there may well be a big brown mark on the floor. Unfortunately, the motor can only generate so much starting torque; water, wet clothes and dodgy bearings can add up to too great a mass for the motor to cope with.
F+P tell you that you need a special set of tools and extractors to change the bearings – it can be done with a large club hammer and a stout steel bar if you’re brave enough. The bearings are 6005Zs. The seal may well be unique – p/no 425009 from F+P.
Cheers,

This was all looking fairly straightforward, F&P charge $110 for a callout & unlimited repair time, plus $40 for new seal & bearings.
Except, the second repair-guy I phoned casts doubt!
He says it should have sounded “like a train in your laundry” which it didn’t, and there’s no water leak.
So, he suggests clutch or electronics board.
Penguin, you suggested:wiring fault with the motor, position sensor or the star poit (where the coils join together).
How to check/diagnose faults with these? How easy to repair?
The alternative is the computer box (motor controller). Is there any way to definitely pinpoint this? Has anybody repaired one?
Thanks for your patience!
