ParticipantHello Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone could assist me please?
I have a Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive 058 MW058U top loading washer.
It’s filling really slow, almost a dribble, and after about 5 mins it realises that something is wrong and starts beeping.
Originally it was only doing this on Hot. About a fortnight after cold only washing now the Cold has gone too.
When it starts beeping both the Hot & Cold lights flash, even if it’s set on only Cold wash.
Mains & Hot water pressure is fine.
Inlet Mesh Filters have been checked & cleaned.
Both Hot & Cold inlet solonoids seem to be spraying a jet water through, but this is obviously not enough.
I’ve checked that air hose that runs to the pressure switch, was clear and unkinked.
I tried to enter diagostic mode, not sure if it was the right way for my machine, but it didn’t show any fault code.
Any ideas what I should try next?
Much appreciated.

Sounds like the valves are shot.
Cold Valve (proptional) 12v – 425320
Hot Valve 12v – 425324Regards,

Wow, thanks for the quick response!
Is it usual for both of these to fail around the same time? Any idea of the cost (just roughly in your local currency). I think this machine is about 10 years old now, and I’m wondering whether it might have more trouble soon.
If it’s not going to be economical to repair, thinking about getting one of the Japanese-style top loaders (the ones with the bi-fold lid, detergent amount guide etc) They have been appearing here in Australia lately, but I had one in Japan and it was great. Actually, slightly tempted to go for a washer/dryer combo such as the Hitachi SF-P80CJ Air Jet machine.. but sounds like could be big trouble when things start to go wrong.
cheers

Even better, AUD$ – thanks a heap. Not too pricey then, much less than expected.

Hi ThirdMonkey
I too am in OZ and there must be something in the water! I have the exact same model washer as you and am suffering the same. The water fills slowly and the hot and cold lights blink and it beeps. Very annoying…
Have you had any luck changing the Valves?
Stupid Question. How is the lid sensed with the quick look i had i didn’t see a switch does it work of a magnet in the lid or an optical switch? I had to sneak a peak under the lid….
Cheers.

The magical lid switch. I can’t find how this works either, so am guessing a hidden magnetic reed switch.
Sorry, I haven’t got hold of the new valves yet. Bit of debate going on here as to whether we should get them and hope that’s the end of the hassles with it, or to start looking for a new machine instead.
We only paid $200 for the F&P about 5 years ago from a relative that was upgrading, and I’m pretty sure that it’s 10 years old now. So although it does look quite modern still I wonder if we might have more troubles soon.
But if you do go ahead and replace yours, please let me know how it goes too.

058 machines were made 96-98.
The lid switch comprises a magnet in the lid itself and reed switch under the top deck. They do fail with age, and are subject to wiring and corrosion problems.

Good news is the new cold water valve fixed the machine. The valve however doesn’t come with a new seal so I had to extract mine from the old valve. It doesn’t appear to leak but the next time I’m driving past a repair shop I’ll pop in and purchase replacement seals for all the interconnections that I needed to open.
Valve to plenum, plenum to controller thingo, controller thingo to tub.
Valve AUD$30 exGST and Shipping – Try Stareast.
Thanks Gents.

I have same problem, I have been getting around it by selecting warm wash, it works then on final rinse it stops and beeps again, so I alter to medium level instead of high, and it finishes the cycle.
However its not convenient to do this all the time, can anyone tell me the procedure for removing the old valve and fitting the new one?
I would be very gratefulJohn in New Zealand.

Power off, two screws round the back and the control panel will lift off. All pretty obvious from there 😀 . Are you quite sure the symptoms match? They do vary slightly across the model ranges.

Hi My model is smartdrive 058 ( Kelvinator)
I switch on machine as if to wash, the water starts to fill, very slowly on cold. and a few minutes later I hear the beeping noises, and flashing lights. I cleaned the flilters on the taps, and at the machine end too. after that I could get it to fill on warm, and it would do almost a full cycle, then on cold wrinse it beeped again, I then set water level on to medium and it completed the cycle.
If i leave the water level on high it wont rinse, just beeps.
If I do nothing I cant get past the fill stage in cold.
I hope that makes sense to you?

Sounds identical as mine.
I used almost the same workaround. Wash on Hot because this valve was ok then when it beeps and stops at the cold rinse cycle i powered off started the wash cycle again on hot. Onceit filled i would forward to the rinse cycle and it carried on.
Change the valve yourself – it really is a piece of cake!
Cheers

Interesting, mine is just having problems too.. I really think they’re a poor machine, going by the number of people with the same problem a few years on! I’d expect 20 years use without problems, much like the less fancy, but reliable non-electronic models.
Anyhow, mine seems to fill up ok.. but after that, it doesn’t seem to do the wash routine, or spin. The rotator will like ‘twitch’ and think about moving, but not actually do anything. Then it will go into ‘beeeeeeeeeeep’ mode. It will drain, fill.. but not wash. Any ideas? 😯
I had trouble with the lid-sensor too.. I just chopped the red and black together where it goes into the plug so it was ‘always closed’. That was a problem for ages too.

I wouldn’t be too hard on the machine, at at least 8 years old she’s about due some maintenance. The other thing to bear in mind is that this appears to be the only forum in the world sorting out F+Ps!
Your problem sounds more motor related – rotor position sensor is a known weak spot. Run the diagnostics and post the code up and we’ll see what we can do.
