You have to take the outer cabinet off and the wash tub out to easily access the three bolts that hold the plastic support tube on. If memory serves me right, the hardest part is getting the old tripod off – good luck 🙁
Stock up with WD40 & penetrating oil – you’ll need it 😆H.T.H,

make sure you clean sharft and lightly grease as new black plastic tube can be difficult to fit. Also when fitting clamp (keyring style) thread a piece of string through first part of clamp then run string down over seal this is much easier than using screwdriver to locate clamp……hope this helps and dont forget to swear at it as it will make the job easy

I never removed the cabinet when doing a gearbox or support tube repair. Spin can out, back panel off, two screws removed from either side of lower back panel, ease the top surround out and lay back, plenty of access to gearbox.

Strange – 14 years on my own – never changed one of these.

clean up the shaft of the gearbox with some emery before sliding the new support tube on, have been known to crack the new tube if you dont.
A job like this demonstrates how much this trade has altered in a very few years. To tell the truth I am glad i dont do any of these sort of jobs anymore. Give me a nice clean pcb swop any day.September 27, 2007 at 8:47 am #228603WhiteVanMan1

As far as I am aware, unless you know differently, or you happen to have one lying around, the seal kits for the TT’s are obsolete. Depending on the condition of said TT, I would be very wary about a repair like this, it could come back and bite in a few weeks time. No offence meant, just my opinion. Steve

wouldnt of thought these parts were still available. I have had a set of belts, wash pump, relay on hand for years in fact I have a set of clutch shoes still marked up GEC Hotpoint must go back to mid 80’s. Would love to get my hands dirty on one of these. Last gearbox I did was about 10 years ago.

The majority of Hotpoint TT parts are obsolete. you can still get the gearbox complete, around £94.00 ex Vat. 😯

Does anyone make a decent twin tub? we had a couple of those polish things, i knew that they were going to be crap when the delivery man carried one under his arm! they both failed within two weeks of selling them. supplier refunded me and said please can you get rid of them as we dont want them back!!!
