Participantboth my dishwasher and fridge have stopped working and im unsure whether to get them fixed or get them replaced.
the fridge is a built in model and the dishwasher is semi-intergrated, the fridge has stopped getting cold (although the light still works) and the dishwasher timer has stopped clicking round and it just keeps making noises without doing anything (its been playing up for a while)… both are smeg…
we’re told that the fridge can be fixed for either £85 (if its the thermostat) or £160 (if its the condenser?)… i havent asked about the dishwasher yet..
i know its going to be cheaper to fix rather than replace but how long might these repairs last before either of these things need fixing again or replacing completely? can anyone give me an honest guesstimate? what is our best options here?
thanks.

Mystic Meg could perhaps forsee the future in this instance? If you want an honest appraisal from any of us experts, you’d best give us make and model number of each appliance (age and blood group optional).
For my part, I would say (without the full facts here) get them fixed as it is the cheaper and far more convenient option by a mile! 🙂

i didnt think it was the same subject.. the other thread was me asking about sizes and what the best makes are etc for a new replacement fridge and dishwasher and this one is asking whether i should just fix what i have and how long it might last if i do!
i thought it would make sense to start a new thread as they are quite different questions… was that bad?

Oh you devil you……..but please stick with two 😉
By the way, have you actually asked the local Smeg agent for their expert opinion as to the viability of repair? After all, unlike asking a barber if you need a haircut, they have no axe to grind and would be better placed to give you the best advice! 🙂

the local smeg agent said that he couldnt possibly comment until he has a look and that’ll cost me £60! plus ive just found out he doesnt know anything about dishwashers so can only repair the fridge…
anyone got any other thoughts on this?

Best find a Smeg agent that can fix both appliances?

tried going through SMEG to find authorised repairers in our area. they were useless. one guy could only repair the fridge and the other place couldnt let us speak to anyone who knew what they were talking about.
i then came back here and looked up ukwhitegoods authorised repairers and sent emails. got a response with a few hours from a lovely, helpful guy who can fix both but was honest as to whether it was worth bothering or not. fantastic!
i know what i’ll do in future!

okay so a very nice guy came and (we hope) fixed the fridge… the temp dial that goes from 1-5 was broken and wasnt actually changing the temperature so the fridge was off… replacement dial it is then (been ordered)… fridge working again.. great…
that is until now. it seems to have stopped getting cold again and im thinking it might be more complicated than just the dial. when it first stopped getting cold i turned it off and on again and it worked for a few hours before giving up again… i think this may have happened again this afternoon…
we’re going to call him back tomorrow but i wondered if anyone had an ideas what might be the problem before we do?
anyone?
he’s not coming back til tuesday and im not sure i can stand another weekend without a fridge… if there’s anything i can do to fix it (giving it a kick springs to mind) or any info i can find out that’ll help make sure its fixed when he comes back would be really helpful!do i need to pull apart the fitted cupbaords before he arrives to give access to the workings of the fridge for example?
thanks.
