ParticipantCan anybody tell me how they are a viable business proposition ?, surely all they attract is the customers that know there appliance is going to cost a fortune to repair eg welded tub change ,compressor changes etc . Also what happens when parts are obsolete ,I can’t imagine that people are going to be happy to be charged £120 to be told there parts are no longer available thoughts please .Cras .

We went over to fixed price repairs must be 7 years ago, we loose out on smaller jobs sometimes as people anticipate it will be a small cost, say door handles etc, but we are busy most times, its swings and roundabouts with repairs as some require no parts and some may be an expensive part and profit is only £30, we no longer go out to bearing jobs and we don’t charge callout if its completely beyond economical repair, sometimes BER is a little unfair on some customers as we no longer attempt time consuming repairs but the repair industry as a whole is testing at the moment so some compromises must be made….

What you don’t know Simon is how many of your customers have called out your local competition for a free estimate then come to you and got it fixed for a paltry profit at best, loss at worst. 🙁

i suspect for the big players theirs a tax write in there somewhere
as it cant be economical for them shelling out on high end built ins etc ,
i suppose the small jobs like block pumps etc are the money spinners –
but like martin points out customers get free estimate 1st and then get the fixed price quote .
so there must be profit or tax write of somewhere for these big cos
