FJ1296 brushes problem

Hi, hope someone can help.
I’ve got a Jetsystem 1200 / FJ1296.
It has just started making a light clicking noise as the drum goes round, and after a fast spin (with fast clicking) there is a distinct electrical smell.
I’ve had it on its back and confirmed that when I undo the brushes the clicking goes away.
The brushes look as if they’ve still got quite a bit of life – they push in an inch or so – but do rattle a little in their casing (and sound like the click).

Advice welcome – but a thought I’ve had: is it more likely to be something to do with the central spindle (which seems firm enough) that has suddenly caused the clicking – or the brushes? Do you reckon new brushes would do it for me?

A segment on the commutator (the copper strips which the brushes run against) will have begun to lift, causing the click as the brushes pass over. At high speed the brushes bounce clean off the raised section and arc, causing the electrical burning smell.

I’m afraid that you have no choice other than to replace the motor at the earliest opportunity.

Yes a motor will give it a new lease of life.

cheers – thanks for speedy response.
Now – how easy is it for an amateur to replace the motor?
I can see a few mounting points (not necessarily easy to get a screwdriver onto) – but does it just drop out and a new one drop in, or would you recommend a professional?

Would recommend an engineer. Machine may have to be split in two.
Check out Repairs@ on lhs of page. If you are going to have a go yourself Unplug from mains first :zap:

good warning icon – although I/it was already unplugged when checking out the brushes.

I may try and remove motor to see if I can do it – but your repairs@ link is local so I may well decide to support the local businessman (especially if he has the part to hand) and have some time to myself instead.

We did speak a short while ago on the telephone regarding a replacement motor for your machine. Having looked up the cost of the motor and labour charge to fit, I can confirm it will be uneconomical to proceed at a cost well in excess of £150 🙁

On a 10 year old machine it therefore is better to cut your losses and buy a new machine 😉
