ParticipantI got back home from New Zealand on Friday. I had checked the garage but did not go in the workshop until this morning. It was therefore quite a shock to discover the workshop has been flooded while I was away. Everything within about 6″ of the floor is coated in a layer of mud and various spares containers are full of dirty water. The strange thing is, there’s no evidence of flooding outside the building. The workshop is a lean-to extension on the end of the house but it’s door is a few inches lower than the house front door. It looks like the nearby burn has burst its banks worse than it did a month or so before I went away. On that occasion the hotel next door was flooded but my place survived unscathed.
I’ve tried to clean up enough hand tools to do some work tomorrow but the multimeter, cordless drill and another few devices have probably had it. A lot of spares are probably also ruined. Before I went away I emptied the van and just dumped everything in a heap on the workshop floor. 😥December 14, 2009 at 8:43 am #306358Martin

Had been pretty wet round these parts Phidom, Moray had it worse as is often the case, not a nice thing to come back to but i guess the main thing is your house is dry, best of luck with the clean up.

Still on NZ time, hence the odd time for posting this. Was just reading my insurance policy and it seems I’m not covered for house contents held for business use. I suggest anyone reading this check their own cover. Even if you have Tools of Trade insurance it might not cover spares stocks.

Likely when you have that sort of problem you don’t sleep well anyway as it’s always buzzing in your head.
Best of luck hope you get sorted soon.

I am indebted to Andy (Specialist01269) who has given me a spare Avo multimeter he had. I had been managing with an old automotive multimeter I won years ago in a competition but it was not ideal as there were no AC ranges. Thanks Andy.

My house and contents insurance is due this month. As I am evidently not adequately covered I just tried GoCompare.com to see if I could find something more suitable to my circumstances. The form asks if I’ve ever been flooded, to which I have to answer yes. I ended up with only one quote, for £537. All the other firms declined to quote, half of them because of the flooding, the rest because I use the property for business use. Looks like I had better just pay the renewal of £174. :rolls:
