We have a few of these vans, bought new in the summer. We have found the tyres have worn excessively on the front wheels, inner edge. In fact 1 van was illegal at 8,000 miles. The wear is only visible if you turn to full lock, then you will see the wires are prodruding.

In each case the tracking was up to 5 deg out, which I’ve been told is a lot. I’ve been told there can be a very small oil leak which affects the track rod return mechanism, and after a few turns on full lock, the tracking is out again. According to those I’ve phoned in the tyre trade, this is well known, in fact one dealer told me that Ford have a serious problem.

I have spoken to my local Ford dealership who are looking into it, but they tell me they were not aware of an issue.

Take a look at the following link, & I would be interested if as I suspect this is a trend.

Did you mean to post this in the public forum Alex?

I thought It may be a good idea.

Reason being, not only our limited trade may be suffering this, but it seems to be a general thing. Therefore if any member of the public just types into a decent search engine this query, they will see they are not alone. I thought if I put it into a trade forum and any interested persons were browsing the net in search of answers on this, they would at least be aware it isn’t unique to them.

Any problems, and if you think it prudent then by all means move it to a different location.

I’ve found a Peugeot dealer offering Partner vans for £5995 plus vat. I get about 17,000 out of tyres on those, whereas the Ford is about 8 to 10k

    HI,

We got 15500 out of the fronts on our connect, the driver is steady and looks after his van. On the other hand my mercedes Vito has now done 26500 and there plenty left in the michelins that it came with. I reckon the ford rubber was cheap in the first place, have replaced the connect fronts with michelins and they are wearing ok.

The main tread area is fine, still had 4-mm on the face. The problem is right on the inside & only visible on full lock. Take a look at the link I put up earlier & you will see what I mean.

1 Van was on Bridgestone, lasted 8,000 miles. The other 2 were on Continentals & they went approx 10,000 miles. The vans these engineers used before were Berlingo’s and they got an average of 18,000 out of them.

BTW. I’m glad Martin liked the festive Avatar, I got it from a very good source. I owe some kind soul a pint.

i had one of these vans 18 months ago, and had same problems with tyres needing replaced about 9000 miles.
was told it was a recognised problem, but ford wouldn’t admit to it.

I had the same on my dispatch HDi while our other 1.9D Dispatch has had no such problems on the same tyres. Put it down to driving style.

    You are not alone.

Our local dealership (Foray Ford) seems to be aware of this but remain cagey everytime we mention it.

They have agree to assist with cost though, so go for it if you have the same problems or issues.

spoke to old colleague since my past post, and seemingly he has been told unofficially by ford dealer that there was ” a batch of duff tyres “.
reckon it must have been a big batch !

Re: Ford Connect Premature Tyre Wear

I run quite a fleet of these vans.

I suspect the blame does not lie with the tyres themselves as we have had this with several makes of tyre.

Consider this, when you buy a new vehicle it makes sense for the tyre company to supply their best wearing tyres, that way you as the owner tend to remember what the 1st replacement mileage was, and you would be tempeted to buy the same again. If they suppiled a tyre of less wuality to keep the prices down, you wuold replace with a different make.

There is no doubt about it, there is a problem with the tracking geometry on these vans, and it has been noticed with the Focus Diesel as well.

As well as the cost, there is a safety issue, so I recommend all owners turn the wheel full lock & inspect the inner edge of the tyre.

Re: Ford Connect Premature Tyre Wear

Knowing one or two people in the car industry I was given some valuable advise, “don’t buy anything with a blue oval on it, they’re garbage!”

Ka’s that don’t corner and bend badly when stuffed, Mondeo’s and Focus’s that even the salesmen don’t want to drive and on the list goes.

Needless to say I don’t have anything Ford and have not had for many years.
