We will be performing a substantial upgrade to the forums from 10pm GMT on Friday 28th September.

For approximately 8-10 hours the forums will be offline, sorry this is unavoidable.

The platform will change and whilst all usernames will be migrated to the new platform passwords will not be. This is for privacy and security reasons.

Please use the password reset on the new forums to reset your password

We hope to have the new forums fully online on Saturday morning but do please bear with us whilst this migration is taking place as there will doubtless be some teething issues.

    But, it will be better!

Just a quick question regarding searches. I have tried a couple of times now searching for fault codes, for example if I search F04 Hotpoint, I only get Hotpoint searches and it ignores F04. If I just search F04, it won’t accept it because its too short I presume. So I can’t seem to find a way of searching for fault codes anymore. Is there any way around this, am I doing something wrong. Its an invaluable source of quick info when i’m on the road for the odd code thats left the memory banks.
    Thanks

It does seem to ignore stuff that is too short or, you get slews of results including partials.

I will ask and see if there’s anything that we can do with it.

No problem Ken , just thought I’d mention it, but I do like the new look.

We are looking at it, there’s a limitation on the search in that, it has to be four characters or more so as you don’t the like of “the”, “and”, “for” etc affecting the search return as you’d then get bombarded with inaccurate results.

But, in this industry, of course, there are loads of three digit error codes.

So all this = a quandary!

ah yes, was going to ask about the search.
Platform certainly looks more attractive but a worse search function

    Huh?

The search is better, more accurate and more relevant results. The one on the last forums platform got nothing but criticised so, other than £12K+ a year for a private Google server, it ain’t getting any better. Obviously, that ain’t happening for a free service.

Ok fair enough, I am grateful for this forum as its a useful free service and perhaps it’s only me but I do miss the old search engine as most of my searches are fault code related which don’t seem to work anymore.

I also appreciate that most of the people using the forum search facility are not using it in the trade specific way I was using it.

    🙂

think is something K is looking into. This formum limits searches to over 3 characters to avoid lots of hit but in our trade we gat lots of 3 figure fault codes

I was but it’s difficult with short search strings. Even Google et all struggle if there’s no context around short search phrases. Thing is you have to keep in mind (:D) is that the search engine logic does not know what’s in your head or in relation to what your searching in relation to.

So three character searches are a taboo as it means you get boatloads of false positive search for “the”, “and” etc. Even if your searching F01 for example, there are loads and probably not what you’re looking for without some sort of identifiers around it.

Honestly, it’s a nightmare that you as users don’t need to know about most of the time nor should you but I would ask to understand that this sort of thing ain’t at all easy.
