F&P IW709 washer – noisy bearings

I have an IW709 that’s become very noisy on spin (all other operation is OK). I had a service tech look at it and he confirmed that a dry bearing is the cause.

I was quoted “at least $300, maybe $500” depending on what would need to be replaced – the candidates were the bearing, seal, shaft, and a nearby PCB which apparently can get wet if the seal is leaking (but, there’s no sign so far of any electronic problem, and if there is a leak would be pretty minor as there’s never been water under the machine).

It seemed a lot to me, so I’m investigating the DIY approach. Before I start dissembly, could someone give me an idea of what’s involved in replacing the bearing? I saw in a thread on a different model that installing the new bearing is best done with special tools, but is possible without – is that the case with the 709 too?

Hi. I have a GW709 that also makes horrendous ‘clacking’ type sounds on spin, accompanied by severe vibration (also makes the same horrendous noise and vibrations during spin without any clothes in it). The top of the inner bowl seems to be slightly distorted as well, which I think may have damaged the bearings through imbalance. I would also love to know how hard it is to change the bearings as it might need a new inner bowl & I would change the bearings & seal at the same time.

I think I’d check that the motor rotor and stator are secure first – bearings tend to growl and then rumble as they fail, as well as depositing dirty brown water on the floor.

When you say top of inner bowl distorted Are you referring to splash guard or top of bowl These can crack /break usally when somethine gets caught in it.
Vibration /Clacking noise probably due to stiff Suspension Rods
Try greasing if not successfiul you may have to change
As Pen suggests you would hear definite bearing noise if bearings shagged

Thanks guys. The inner bowl is distorted on the plastic ring that is on top of the stainless steel section. I’ll check the motor for security & the suspension rods as suggested. If neither of these work, are inner bowls expensive? I have removed a bowl from a similar machine before, but never the seal or bearings. If required, are seals/bearings difficult to replace?
