Hello! I’m a student and have a fridge in my room (that is not my own). Inside the fridge there is a small metal compartment hanging from the top ceiling that serves as a freezer box (there is a pipe running into it), with a drip tray underneath. This freezer box has rapidly built up with ice (frosty and nearly impossible to chip away at), and needs to be cleared somehow. The ice however has effectively stuck the whole section to the shelf below it, and there is no clear way to detach it anyhow as the pipe is connected to the back. There is no temperature control anywhere on the fridge, and I don’t have access to the power supply at the back to unplug it (I think it’s been made not to be tampered with, because they don’t trust all of us students apparently!).
What’s the best way to remove this ice? I would rather not go to the house master as he has 400 students to sort out, so don’t think he’d appreciate me asking about the ice in my fridge… Any help would be much appreciated, it’s more annoying than anything else (lots of dripping).

You would still need to turn it off before defrosting it.
It should have a thermostat control on it somewhere inside.
If you use a hair dryer and it is not turned off you will increase the pressure in the system and you could blow the seals in the compressor.
Do not use any thing to chip away the ice as you could puncture the evaporator and then the fridge would be beyond economical repair.
It would be best just to turn the thermostat control if you can find it to zero / 0 to turn it off or a mains switch to turn the power off, empty the fridge and icebox and let it defrost with the doors open.
Make sure you have towels down and put a washing up bowl in the fridge to soak up the water.
