ParticipantI need a relay for my under-counter domestic freezer. It is not possible for me to just buy the replay for my particular model (Currys Essential model CUF48W13) without the compressor. I suspect it is built-in-obsolescence! My compressor is OK – the compressor resistance measurements are 34, 39, and 74ohms.
Can you suggest a suitable alternative relay that I could use?March 20, 2020 at 10:04 am #467186electrofix
Moderatorjust because the resistance readings seem ok does not mean its mechanically ok
what fault are you getting on this
bear in mind its the cheapest of the cheap and the lowest possible quality

ParticipantI do realise that it is a crap model! All that happened is it stopped working. When switched on it would buzz quietly for about 15 seconds then there would be a click(relay?) and it would stop buzzing. I removed the relay and measured the compressor resistance. The relay appears to be a solid state version and it rattles which I believe is a tale-tale sign that it is had-it. Is this helpful?

ParticipantTry looking for a solid state relay to replace the one that is on it, the Supco ICG220 may help you if you cannot get an original.

ParticipantHi Tony,
Thanks for the advice. I’ll take the risk and order one.March 31, 2020 at 10:53 am #467190Jackamus
ParticipantHi Tony,
I have now got one of these relays but I have a problem of how to connect as I have two spare mains wires. How do I attach their wiring diagram if I appear not to have enough file space in this message? Perhaps you could advise?March 31, 2020 at 11:02 am #467191electrofix
Moderatorhost the pic on another server and post a public link

ParticipantOK. Here is a Dropbox link to the diagram. https://www.dropbox.com/s/fvq2tnog5jupwet/Relay{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}20diagram.jpg?dl=0
Can you tell me where I connect the mains-in wires to this diagram? I do have a starter capacitor.

Moderatorcant say if you have a cap only you can say that. its a fairly big component
live goes in through the overload top left of pic
neutral goes to wire nut in run wire

ParticipantThanks Dave. I’ll check it out. If I have any problems I’ll come back to you if I may.

ParticipantHi Dave,
I’m not having a lot of luck! Can you draw a diagram showing how the mains, the 3 wires from the thermostat, and the 2 wires from the capacitor should connect together? If I connect in the way you describe then the 2 wires (white and brown) appear to be spare.

Moderatoryes in a word because at the moment you will have no wire on the compressor right pin i assume
. there should be 3 wires in the nut. 1 from new relay 1 from N and on from compressorDave

ParticipantIts becoming clearer now. I need to connect a wire from the nut to the right pin of the compressor but what about those 2 wires (brown and white) that go to the thermostat?

Moderatorthe live goes through the stat so the live wire connects to the stat and the return wire that becomes live when the stat is energised goes to the cut out
