fridge/freezer overload protection help

hi guys I need help sourcing a thermal overload protector for my parents fridge freezer. the part is
b40-120/b jx
now im unsure if this is 1/3hp or 1/4hp I cant find any information anywhere online. I list appliance model below with a picture of device.
ive replaced ptc relay already.

so the problem , parents said freezer had defrosted (unsure if door was open or not)
plugged back
compressor hums
few seconds later loud audible click goes off
and again repeats this cycle after a short period.

stripped it down and tested compressor
tested s/m/c all add up correctly on the ohms meter (0.27/0.21/0.48)
tested ptc relay – this was showing as around 13ohms. was a sealed unit and day of lockdown so just ordered one anyway and have fitted.
tested overload showing ohms across the circuit on relevant pins (still believe this is the fault?)
no compressor to ground problems.
appliance is a 50/50 fridge freezer no fan anywhere or auto defrost. just one thermostat in top of fridge
tested thermostat and door connection all showing correct readings. also thermostat will turn off when set to 0 and supply power to compressor when turned higher.
I installed new ptc relay and had the same problem hum/click/off
so I removed overload and bypassed for a few seconds , compressor hums but doesn’t stop now as no thermal overload. starts to sound like refrigerant moving round. didn’t want to leave on long and damage anything further to fully check.
so is it possible its the overload, even though im getting continuity and it cuts power?

cheers for any help , I cant seem to find the part anywhere in the uk at the moment. I was unsure of hp also and if it could be replaced with one of the flat ones.

sorry to say this but i think your wrong. The overload is doing its job. The hum means the compressor is powered up but because it does not start it draws more current so the overload trips
if it is a capacitor start compressor you can try that otherwise i woud say its a new compressor or fridge

would welcome input from other refrigeration engineers to confirm but i woud say its dead and its not a job you can do yourself

thanks for the response, I did presume what you said as the audible click was the overload kicking in. I was wondering if it could become weaker and kick in too soon. but im pretty certain your correct. would rather spend a couple of pounds when there is a freezer shortage at present though just to confirm. if you look at the circuit diagram in the picture it does say there is a capacitor, but looking around my compressor there is no evidence of one. any ideas?

no got no info on that unit as we dont with cheap imports

its normally mounted next to the compressor as unless the box was big enough it would not fit inside

also in the diagram the capacitor has a dotted line and the other component is probably a thermistor starting circuit or the like. The dotted line will mean an either or situation. so you unit will either have one or the other and it your case it probably does not have the cap

Electrofix is more than likely right in that the compressor is seized.

cheers for that I did look at replacement model and that has a compressor with a capacitor. so I think your bang on the money. will still try and source a overload as only a few quid just to see. and at the same time im checking freezers daily , theres none in the uk ha ha

none of what in the country. this unit is a standard 50 50 split fridge freezer in silver

Looked on one site and they have 12 options but one around the same height for £299. And they have stock

sorry I meant just a freezer on its own. national shortage. she does have a fridge otherwise I wouldn’t have been messing about. I did manage to find a few single freezers in stock today. but compared to the price a 50/50 split looks far more economical. any good brands of fridges in terms of compressor reliability vs buying 5 cheap budget models over the same time. or is it about the same and we just need newer technology

if you want Quality you buy Liebherr. They also supply Miele which makes a lot of the top quality appliances

cheap and cheerful then Beko is not too bad. Would not even think about anythinfg currys essentials or bush which is an Argos own brand

as for your freezer depends on the height and width you want
beko H 145.5 W 60 cost £289 upwards
liebherr H125 w60 cost £549 2 year guarentee

but as you say little or no stock

Word on the street from our manufacturers is anything Hotpoint, Indesit and Whirlpool not until May, Bosch end April, Statesman May, Beko no due date and Liebherr stock very patchy.

appreciate the response. interesting, I usually go for quality that’s built to last. but unfortunately certain products aren’t built that way as im sure your all well aware. if only the the more expensive models came with a longer guarantee I wouldn’t hesitate. I will have a look what is available for them and probably purchase a reasonable extended cover if cheap enough .
