ParticipantHi I’m new to this forum.
We need to buy our first Fridge freezer but are cautious about Kenwood’s badging and Hotpoint’s creda /indesit plants not knowing exactly who makes what.
We could spend up to £400ish and would like a nett fridge capacity of about 235 and 93 freezer so it’ll be a 60 /40 I think. The depth shouldn’t be more than 680mm max and we don’t mind white. What would be a good make?

Hi everyone,
I forgot to say a 600mm width fridge freezer is essential and I meant cubic nett litreage when I said 235 / 93.Glad I found this forum because I now know that Kenwoods don’t make the Fridge freezer and are only distributed through Curry /PC world.
I like Hotpoint but learn’t it could be made by Creda or Indesit. Is that a bad thing though? Samsung are quite expensive but are they much better?

Hotpoint, Creda, Indesit is now under the control of Whirlpool and they do make their own refrigeration.
Essentials is an own label brand for Currys only and could be anything, some Chinese thing, Vestel… pretty much anything but it’ll be at the lower end of things.
Kenwood is a subset of Delonghi and both of Fisher & Paykel who are now owned by the Chinese Haier company. And whilst F&P did (still does I think) make some decent fridges the good ones would be well expensive, Liebherr money and upwards. The rest I would expect will be rebranded Haier products.
Samsung I don’t like intensely, horrid company to deal with. Extra, ely limited technical support, terrible aftersales by many accounts and spares not cheap or easy to come by so, probably best avoided.
Cheap end, probably Beko is about as good as any.
Something good, Liebherr.
Something in between the two, probably Electrolux Group stuff, AEG, Zanussi, Electrolux… they’re all the same thing more or less just rebadged.

Thank you kwatt.
Well pleased that I found this site. I hadn’t noticed ‘Essentials’ in respect of fridge Freezers whilst in Currys or is this for smaller electrical items? May I ask if you consider the cheap end about £250 / £300 and the more expensive end £500 plus?
Thank you for all your assistanceNovember 29, 2016 at 12:40 am #443201kwatt

You appraisal is about right for the machines you’re looking at in terms of budget.
If you can stretch to the Liebherr, it’s an order of magnitude better.
If not, the other suggestions are okay but they are a compromise by comparison.

Hi K
Thank you again…
Just been talking to a friend more technical than me and he mentioned fridge freezers may only have one motor which serves both fridge and freezer, so if motor breaks you’ve got nothing. Have you heard of a ‘danfoss’ twin motor?

That is true.
Sadly though in cost conscious times and the consumer drive for lower and lower prices there is almost no chance of a twin compressor fridge freezer these days and, were you to find one it would not be cheap.
Even most large machines, even American style side by sides are all single compressor machines now.
The only way round it I guess is a totally separate fridge and freezer.

Hello K.
Can I please confirm that I’m using this forum correctly? When I post / have posted a question, I notice that many people view it but all replies have come from just you If anyone else had any comments, would I be able to see them in the same way as yours?By the way, my wife is now considering Bosch as Liebherr is a bit beyond our budget but it is a German machine! We are beginning to wonder whether Hotpoint / Indesit / Creda, although popular, Might not be as problem free as we thought in terms of quietness. I think you said Beko might have been a tiny cut above Hotpoint ( although still bottom end ) and we’ve still to consider Electrolux group and what about Hoover, are they a part of a wider group too?

Yeah everyone can see it and will chip in if they’ve anything to add.
Ehm, Bosch, German!?
Nope.
A great many (if not most) Bosch products never see German soil, ever. The money may as it flows back to Germany but the products, nope.
If it says “Made In Germany” on the rating plate it was at least put together there, the components can come from anywhere as in, most of them as country to origin is legally only the last place a major process took place, which could be as glorious as screwing the doors on.
If it says “Made In EU” on it, it ain’t German built. Could be Spain, could be Poland, could be any EU state really.
Bottom line, just because the brand name alludes to and gives the impression of German, British or whatever else doesn’t mean to say it actually is what you believe it to be.
The only refrigeration I can tell you with (almost) 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certainty is German built is Liebherr. Beyond that, all bets are off.
Hoover is owned by Candy.
You can get the lowdown on who owns who here:

Loads of into in there.
Video on rebranding is here:

It’s all down to research in essence but to determine where a specific model came from, what it is and so forth can be a chore for some due to lack of information. For example, Bosch do not allow us access to any spares, technical or production info so we can’t tell you a whole lot about them other than what has been published.

Thanks both to Kwatt, once again and also to Don who I’m presuming was going to say the same thing?

Hi Kwatt & Don
Happy New Year!
Since posting I’ve been all over the place to look at Liebherr fridge freezers wherever they were show- roomed
This may sound like a daft question but is the ‘order of magnitude better’ hidden in the build of the unit? We were at least impressed by the glass door shelves and steel chromium rails but are the mechanics built to a higher spec than all other fridge freezers ( probably with the exception of Miele )
cheers

Liebherr make the Miele units. 😉
Yes, they are better internally as well as build generally.
