ParticipantI’ve been around the forums here and elsewhere and read the advice pages too.
Hoover HNM3105 AA L80 – a combination fridge-freezer, supposedly frost-free.
The freezer is still running and still frosting up (think that’s a bad door seal). It’s possibly a little less frosty than it was but is still keeping stuff frozen solid. That’s the good news.
Bad news is that the fridge is pretty much at room temperature. First thing I noticed was it was wet inside under the veg-tray (but the drain is clear), then a few things seemed to be going off, then some chicken stunk the house out. Then noticed it wasn’t cooling. So it may be it failed slowly?
Have had the front facade off (sawed it off rather than removing the door!) to get to the thermostat. Thermostat works, unplugging the black wire turns off compressor, plugging it in turns on. Has a resistance – unwired (except earth) – of 1.5 Ohms across the connectors. Doesn’t appear to do anything when you turn the dial, no clicks or such, possibly it’s failed closed?
Compressor casing is very hot but the condenser is room temperature except close to the compressor, this appears to be just conduction along the condenser pipework. Pipework exiting the freezer is cold.
Much obliged for any help. Just finished fixing the washing machine; cooker is needing attention .. and we’re supposed to be having guests for Christmas, argh!

Looking at the tech on it I’d not be surprised if the freezer wasn’t getting down to temperature and the compressor was running weak.
Although the food can appear frozen it is quite possible that it isn’t getting to -18?C so it will run all the time and the fridge won’t chill.
There’s really nothing else in it that could cause those symptoms from what I can see.

That’s a quick reply. Thanks kwatt.
So presumably that means it’s dead? 😥
In which case it looks like I’m getting a fridge for Christmas …?
Edit: any suggestions on where [not] to buy and what to avoid/look for – it’ll be the cheapest f/f we can find otherwise.

Yes, if that’s the case, given it’s at least knocking on five and half years old I wouldn’t advise a repair, not economically viable.
What to buy depends on your budget really and how good you want it to be, look or special features.
