Fridge only works for a couple of minutes.

Hi all. I have a rather old fridge (with freezer) and it stopped working all of a sudden. The odd thing though is that if its off for a day or so, then it works again for a couple of minutes before going off again.

Its a bit like its overheating or something. Not sure really, since I have no idea what so ever, how a fridge works.

Question is, could there be some sort of colling liquid be empty? If so, can I buy it at a reasonable price and refill it myself to try and see if its that?

Or is the reason something completely different?

Probably the compressor has gone but, regassing is not a DIY job by any stretch even if it were that and, you need to do that to replace a compressor i’m afraid.

Unless there’s a compelling reason to keep it, you may be better to consider replacing it as a repair would likely be quite expensive on an old unit.
