ParticipantHi
Our holiday home fridge/freezer developed a strange (to me) fault. The question is in two parts.
The fridge half does not cool down but the freezer half does. In fact the freezer is very cold and ice cream is rock hard. As the device only has a single compressor I find it difficult to understand why this is so. Could the fridge thermostat be the cause of the problem? The MTRF290 is supposed to be an auto-defrost model if that is significant.
New thermostats are NLA but there is a universal model for fridges and fridge/freezers with a K59 thermostat which, I believe, the MTRF290 has. Can anyone confirm this and, more importantly, whether it will physically fit in even if electrically the same. What is the physical difference, apart from length of capillary tube?
As an extra question. is there a diverter valve somewhere to push the coolant either towards the fridge half or the freezer half as I have difficulty understanding how single compressor fridge/freezers work properly.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Paul,
I can’t see a diverter valve fitted so I would assume that you’ve probably got a compressor fault. I doubt it’d be the stat unless someone knows something I don’t.

*sigh*, I suspected as much.
Thanks anyway.

Hi
As this is a holiday home i suspect that you don’t have the heating used very often also not knowing where it is. It would be advisable to use the low ambient switch which is next to the thermostat knob. A universal thermostat will fit into the thermostat housing also. If you still have the plastic disc which is on some of the older models between the thermostat holding disc and the rear fridge wall then remove it and leave it off.
This model doesn’t have a diverter valve and works on the principle of the refrigerant going through the freezer compartment first which would get colder first before the fridge temperature drops. Simply put.
