after the palava i’ve experienced this morning, i need an opinion. i wont tell the story as its rather long, but to cut it short, the tennants of my aunties house are refusing to pay for this month and are being stupid buggers (sorry for the language) needless to say, she had been in tears and if she hasnt been through enough, and they have done a fair bit of damage in the house. Part of the damage was to a reasonably new Hygena gas oven. The grill door is broken entirely, the tennant said she was grillling some food, walked away for a minute and the door fell off, i think this is absolute rubbish, and think it has been deliberately broken, the kitchen is only a few years old and i saw it before they moved, it was immaculate, the sort of state my aunt would leave things in. Being a gas grill, if the door was closed which it shouldnt be, wouldnt a thermostat shut the grill off if it got too hot? Only the metal frame, hinges and handle is left of the door, all the glass is gone, i’m not being funny, but no oven suddenly drops to bits on its own, not even cheap ones. Does the damage sound intentional, or could it of happened accidently?
And where can she get a replacement door from?

no, there wouldnt be a thermostat capable of switching the GAS off if it overheated, at most, the grill will always stay at the temperature you set it at , door closed or not.gas grills rarely work on a thermostat, normally, its just an open valve, with the gas lit, its that simple
glasses on ovens do shatter, its fact, and sometimes for no reason at all
although, if you ask traders/landlords… ovens.hobs.fridges etc, that are supplied to them are generally not respected or looked after at all
which is why most people stop supplying them.. people tend to look after stuff better if they paid for it, its that simple
difficult positon to be in, but the general consencus would be misuse, and pure ignorance by the tennant
and no, doors dont just ‘fall off’, they all need some sort of effort to remove, sounds to me like theyve been over-physical, or dropped something on it

model number would be helpfull if you would like to try and get a replacement, as hygena ovens are generally mfi branded machines

Im not sure about the number but it is a Hygena Classic 90cm eye level double oven in green, similiar to this one

Hi Adam,
Helo is correct, they generally don’t fall off for no reason and usually when they do it’s because the hinges have failed totally. This is generally through wear and tear on the hinges (or rubbish hinges) but most do last a few years and, even when they are on the way out, you’d have to be pretty dumb not to realise they were goosed as the door will flop about all over the shop.
So, as to the claim that it just fell off of it’s own volition, I doubt it somehow.
We will need the exact model number to get you any parts though as there’s bucketloads of these double ovens I’m afraid.
The prices really depend on the model and who made it but, fair warning, there are some that are NLA from MFI these days, even fairly young ones. 🙁

I believe this is a stoves build as I think they were the only recent company to make gas ovens for diplomat, if so then it will have an overheat stat to cut the grill off if it overheats.
so what does it do? turn off the gas? then turn the gas back on when it cools?
im curious now, cos the grill wont reignite, now will it?

There has been a couple of stoves models out for the past 5 years that has a cut off stat in the top cavity which shuts off the electric valve supplying gas to the grill,The stat is a manual resettable one not auto reset.
It would only stop the grill from working,this is normally caused by lack of ventilation (bad instal) or that the customer has kept the grill door shut for a long period.Bryan
