Interesting reading the article on the front page especially this little nugget :-

    * It will be asked to review the competence requirements for registration of gas installers with a view to simplifying the current requirements and reducing burdens on installers.

Maybe, just maybe this will make it worthwhile getting certificated and doing some gas work? I’ve done gas work before many moons ago under the old company registration scheme and i have to say that generally it was a doddle…i’m sure it could be quite profitable too 😉

I just wonder how far the simplification will go…. 😕

    Re: Gas work

If I have my way, a lot simpler. 😉

I did give Frontline, the agency tasked with the review, some food for thought.

This is just a perfect cause for a TA to persue? 😉

    Re: Gas work

I’d do it anyway Clive as it’s a total PITA that’s been poorly thought out IMO, an opinion that I didn’t hesitate to share. 😉

The whole thing is geared totally toward gas fitters and boiler/heater repairers and not one single consideration has been given to us at any stage. It was interesting to hear from those involved that no opinion had been received from anyone in this industry at any stage. That only serves to show how well we’ve been looked after on some of the issues that actually affect us and, needless to say, I was less than happy about it. Thankfully I wasn’t a lone voice entirely as other industries have similar issues.

That said I will find it hard to forgive both AMDEA and DASA for totally dropping the ball on this one. IMO little short of absolute incompetence as members from both have a massive interest in the area.

I did kinda beat the HSE up over it though. 😆

    Re: Gas work

This is where UKW and the new TA have to take the initiative forward as gas repairs (especially to cookers: both gas and dual fuel) are a huge ‘no man’s land’ waiting to be harvested. Since reading the UKW forums over the last 18 months, and seeing the fears raised by other members, I have turned away countless dual fuel cookers with fan elements blown. Not because I couldn’t do the job, but because the fall-out in the event of a problem is unthinkable.
That, in many ways, is the fault of CORGI. It has to be said that it is good that the gas industry is policed – but if the rules and requirements are disjointed when it comes to appliances (especially when no gas – tight connection has been broken), things have to change. Moreover, when its own members aren’t entirely sure of its OWN regulations. CORGI’s exclusivity suggests that everything in the rulebook should be fully comprehensive and cast in stone. 😉 And certainly no grey areas.
CORGI have to alter their position to be as inclusive as possible and not overtly exclusive in order to draw all repairers under its jurisdiction. The current exclusivity (coupled with extortionate qualifying fees) could make some repairers just think “Sod it, it’ll be alright” and that can’t be good for anyone. The customer is the one that suffers in the long run, ironically the very people these organisations are set up to protect.

    Steve.
