ParticipantHi,
We have a General Domestic Appliance dishwasher BF41. The water is not heating within the machine and keeps running on cold. Was advised that there might be food on the element and to run a cleaning detergent through. Carried this out and the machine worked for one wash. But same problem has come back again. Any idea? Do I need to get into the element to clean? If so, how do you access? Cheers. CompaqJanuary 22, 2010 at 11:25 am #309587iadom

Made by Brandt.
Don’t see many of these. There is a small red reset button on the thermostat, access from underneath. if you press that and feel/hear a click then it should work. If the reset stat trips again in short order then you may have another problem such as under filling.
If you have used the correct detergents and salt if required then its very unlikely that the heater will need ‘cleaning’.
You can access the heater to test it electrically from the lower front plinth area, lie the machine carefully on its back after placing a few towels on the floor.
Could also be a timer fault.
Be sure to remove the mains plug first.

Hi there! I also have a Hotpoint BF41 made by Brandt – mine ran all night and wouldn’t empty either! I suspected the programmer but spoke to an engineer who assured me he’d never changed one, but the likelihood was that it had overheated and thrown the heater trip (red button on top of the plastic tub the element lives in) stopping the program moving on. Mine had tripped (just press button and it clicks) but apparently the cause is an intermittent thermostat on the door! There are 3 and apparently can work fine for 10 or more washes before misbehaving again, so I’m currently trying to work out which one it is as they’re about £30 each!!

Rubbish – the safety will trip due to underfilling. Remove and clean out the three hoses running across the bottom of the machine to solve the problem.
Power off first.

Not sure about ‘rubbish’ – the thermostat info was given to me by a fully qualified engineer! However in this case the fault turned out to be the housing for the element being full of sludge and limescale, causing the element thermostat to operate before the water reached the desired temperature, preventing the door thermostats operating and consequently the programmer ‘moving on.’ Cleaning out the housing and descaling the element gave a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} cure!
