We have inherited a side-by-side US style fridge with our new home. However, it doesn’t get very cold! When set to the minimum (coldest) settings, the fridge just about makes it down to a cold enough temperature. The freezer doesn’t quite reach freezing.
Any thoughts before we call in an engineer (and if so, where would we find one)?

where are you based?
your fault could be due to a number of things.
more likely causes are the defrost cycle in the freezer or the freezer evaporator fan not working.Re: GE PCG23MIMHFBB not getting very cold
Well, I’ve tried the engineer search now that I’m aware of it! I’m in Berkshire.
Before I call in an engineer, I’d just like to make sure it isn’t something really simple.
So… the fridge half doesn’t really get cold enough either – it is probably getting down to 7 degrees (I have a very simple thermometer in that side that only distinguishes between too warm, safe zone, too cold – it measures just above safe zone). The freezer doesn’t quite freeze.
I can hear fans running. When I open either door, the fans stop.
Right now the freezer has a very little frost on the plate, but nowhere elseMany thanks

Hi
Have you cleaned the condenser at the rear, You will need to remove back panel ( turn off the appliance ) black metal unit with a cardboard end.. Hoover that fully and try again after a 24hr FULL defrost.

That was the sort of advice I was waiting for!
That said, it has not fixed the problem. I have hoovered out the condenser and done a 24 hour defrost with no obvious effect. What I have learned though is that the rear panel has been off many times before. And that the water filter was last changed in August 2004!
Time to call an engineer methinks. I’m prepared to give it one go before writing off the fridge…

Is that one with a linear compressor in it Bryan?
I’ve still got a data logger in mine to try to work out why it randomly seems to heat up and I suspect, but can’t prove it of course yet, that it’s down to the pot stalling.
If it’s a typical GE as I’ve seen them though the cooling fan has a sorta tube type affair on it, much like a PC CPU heatsink a la low noise flavour and the whole tube (if you like) needs to be clear or airflow will get restricted. If the airflow is restricted or, not correct, it will allow the compressor to overheat and cut out. This is not a good thing.
Depending on how it’s sited also make sure the front grill is clear or it won’t be able to draw cool air in to cool the compressor with. Also, not a good thing.
After that you’re into boards, sensors, the evap fan motor and thermistor and of course the compressor itself all of which are not so cheap.

It’s got the standard compressor,Yours has the linear compressor.
Common prob’s with the pcg23 are main board & evap motor. Quite often more than not both need to be changed.
Dependent on which part of berkshire you are,We maybe able to cover it.

An update, and apologies for reviving this thread – we have moved house and have many other problems to sort out.
Anyway, on Bryan’s advice, I’ve checked that the fan runs on the freezer side when the door is closed (ok, open, but with the door switch depressed). It doesn’t – the fan on the fridge side runs, but IF there is also a fan on the freezer side, it isn’t running. Can anyone confirm there really is a fan on the freezer side?
