glass door for Sheffield 1100 range cooker

Hi, does anyone know where I can get an inner glass oven door made to fit a Sheffield 1100 Range cooker ? This cooker was only made for a short time mid to late 90s, is extremely solid and well made, and was distributed by the Range Cooker Co. in Blackpool, (britannia) who have told me the part is no longer available.

I figured there could not be anything THAT special about oven door glass other than it having to be strong and extremely heat resistant, but I seem to be drawing a blank.

I repeat, I’m not looking for an original manufacturer replacement, as I’ve been told they are not available any more, just looking for a lead to a company that can make a suitable substitute.

A specialist glass supplier maybe ?

All oven door glass parts are made specifically for certain models and are supplied as such, in virtually every case we have no idea of the physical size etc from the service information supplied, so even the size wouldn’t help identify a replecement I’m afraid.

Please be aware that inner oven door glass panels very often are “reflective glass” in that they reflect the heat inwards, they are not just toughened high temp panels.

There must be someone out there though that makes them, any ideas anyone ?

Since my post I did a bit of net searching and confirmed what you say about the glass having to be heat reflective.

I also found the web site of a glass manufacturer who supplies the appliance manufacturers, as it were – http://www.schott.com but I doubt these people would be interested in an enquiry from joe public.

I can’t imagine I am the only person to have had this problem. The cooker was bought just before Christmas 1998 so is just over 5 1/2 years old. It seems hard to believe that others have not had to replace oven glass in the past.

I’ve contacted numerous glass companies out of the Yellow pages, and of the 2 that do fire-resistant glass, neither could say for sure whether it was suitable for ovens; one said it was suitable for stoves, but I’m guessing that means it is far from reflective; in fact probably the complete opposite !

I assume you have asked ‘Corning Glass’ who make most oven and ceramic hob glass (and sub contract under license to others) throughout the world (and the UK) also of course Pilkinton Glass 😉

If memory serves me right there is legislation in place that states that a manufacturer must have spares available for certain period of time. It may well be worth contacting Trading Standards to see what they think of this.

7 yrs from date of cessation. The catch is “Suitable replacement part” – you may finish up with a an entire replacement door!

Dave, Martin and K (being older than I) will no doubt remember Hoover making the “small hole” drum pulley obsolete, and replacing it with an entire drum/pulley/backplate assembly. This was deemed to be a suitable replacement!

Hello whirlpool agents…..

you guys might be able to help as plenty of whirlpool oven inner door glasses become unglued and you replace the whole of the inner door panel.
That means you have available “reflective glass by the bucket load as this is a common fault and you do do shed loads.

So how about offering a piece to our futureboy and see if its large enough for him to get cut to his size….then a tube of high temp glue from dave_conway and the jobs a good un

What a great idea from Kevin !

I wonder if the glass would be big enough though. The size is as follows:

60.5 cm high x 35.5 cm wide x just over 3mm thick

It’s one of those types that rather than being inset into the door, is actually screwed to the door frame at it’s four corners, so it’s actually pretty much the same size as the door itself.

It all seems to have gone quiet on the suggestions for replacement oven glass.

Was anyone able to verify whether the glass from the Whirlpool cookers was a suitable replacement ?

Failing that, I had the idea of maybe ordering the inner glass panel for another make of cooker – e.g. a Zanussi 90 cm SINGLE oven door range model, where the glass panel certainly would be large enough, and then getting it cut to size. Does anythone think this would be a bad idea ?

I contacted Schott glass, who put me on to a ditributor who quoted me almost £ 200 including delivery for a piece of glass cut to size, I think they called it cermaic glass, with a slight brown tint to it; but again, they were not able to tell me if it would be the same spec as the one I had.

To the gentleman who said I might have to buy a whole new door – if only I could ! They don’t do those either.

I don’t want to waste anyone’s time so if I don’t get any further joy, thanks to everyone for the suggestions so far.

At those dimensions the whirlpool glass wont fit, its too small.

How about talking direct to a local glazier to see what they could do for you….in the yellow pages..you could try http://www.acornartglass.com tel 01142730650 etc
