Hi guys, Following the advice on here I went back to powder in the dishwasher but being disabled I found it difficult to lift so I’ve got some of those new things where the powder is wrapped in a material that dissolves but its not an all in one, which I took we are supposed to avoid. Now my problem is that my glasses have come out all scratched, you can feel they are scratches when you run a finger nail over them. This product is a leading brand for washing up on the market, so is it something I’m doing wrong or is it the product?

    thanks
    Lynn

    Re: Glasses scratched

    Hi Lynn,

There’s two types of scratching, mechanical and chemical that can occur.

Mechanical is pretty simple, it’s generally the glasses touching or something touching the glasses in the machine that cause the problem. Also it can be the handling of the glasses but I think that unlikely unless you’re rough with them.

Mechanical scratching is usually quite pronounced and, on the likes of wine glasses, at the widest part of the glass.

Chemical scratching would generally be more of a “swirl” pattern and not as pronounced normally. This is caused by poor quality glass (sorry), soft water and the use of cycles that are too long or hot for glass.

There is no way to reverse the damage.

Thanks K, I just thought it was odd that its only started since changing the detergent, I haven’t altered any settings and it was fine on the all in one tablets. These new powder bursts are made by Fairy so I thought they would be good but all Ive got now is a load of scratched glasses.

Can anyone tell me why you guys don’t like the all in ones please.

    Thanks
    Lynn

    Re: Glasses scratched

The all in one tablets don’t dissolve correctly in a lot of machines from what I’ve seen and therefore give poor results as well as the possibility of damage by overflowing, it’s that simple.

Fairy Active Bursts disolve almost immediately on contact with water and so there’s not that problem, in fact there’s a lot of pluses in their use and, as you point out, it’s largely powder in a bag, engineers will always revert to that as it causes the least problems for the customer. Sadly powder appears to be a thing of the past almost as people are demanding easy to use products, i.e. tablets in this instance.

Active Bursts are all in one and they will work on their own, they just work better if used with rinse aid and salt where the water hardness demands it, but the same can also be said for standard tabs in respect of salt use as that’s a dosing issue.

The scratching isn’t to do with the detergent though, there’s something else at work to cause it.

Thanks for explaining it for me K but I’m still confused as nothing else has changed, the glasses are over year old, been in the dishwasher 100’s of times with other detergents with no problems, they were separated so not damaged by each other. Our water is very hard but I’ve not altered the setting and was using the 3 in 1 tablets with added salt so I thought it may have been caused by too little salt but after you explained that soft water can cause the scratching then its obviously not that.

One of life’s unexplained mysteries it seems 😆 I’m just gutted because I bought 3 packs of them as they were cheap on an introductory offer 😥

Thanks again K , I just like to know these things.

    Re: Glasses scratched

It may well be a simple case of overdosing in that case Lynn – there is a very small amount of water in a table top model, so it may not be able to dissolve the quantity of detergent being used. Result – gritty soilds being sluiced round.

That’s the beauty of powder – you can cut the dose down to suit your needs.

    Just a thought,

    Re: Glasses scratched

I use an F&P Dishdrawer which is, in effect, two mini dishwashers and I was advised strongly not to use tablets in it. I did use the old Fairy ones and they were fine, but it was hard to get them as well as a decent brand of actual powder and so I ended up using Finish liquid. The liquid I didn’t rate for actual cleaning ability as I had a lot of residues, mainly the dreaded grit of re-deposited food.

I have moved onto Active Bursts as I was testing them before they were released officially in the UK and I’ve had no such issues. They may well be over-dosing in the smaller machine but it’s not caused me a problem as yet. However, Chris is correct and the table-tops use even less water than a Dishdrawer from memory so it may be the cause but I’d still suspect the actual composition of the glass before anything else.
