My 3 year old budget Beko Washing Machine conked out 2 weeks ago. I was told the bearings had gone and it would be costly to fix due to them being sealed. Prior to this my hotpoint prior lasted about the same length of time before it died.

In contrast my mothers zanussi had lasted over 18 years and is still going, so I did a bit of research and was finally enlighted to the fact that washing machines aren’t made like they used to be, 20 years ago. After a few more hours of research finding out which machines are still well manufactured, I made my mind up to buy a Miele w1613. The price tag well beyond what I can afford at the moment, but I thought it to be a wise investment.

Anyway I placed my order with Comet for this machine, as it was cheapest I could find at £540 inc delivery. Big mistake, 4 days later no email confirmation had come through. I called the customer service serveral times over several days, only to be told I had to wait until I get the confirmation of payment before delivery could be arranged. When I eventually got the confirmation, I got a call telling me Miele were out of stock, and it would take 4 weeks to get to me, as the product was extended range. On top of this the had debited the payment card twice. Anyway being already 2 weeks without a washing machine, our family of 4’s washing was piling up, so 4 weeks wasn’t realistic. After sorting the payment issue, I cancelled the order.

Today I went to my local washing machine shop who had a Bosch WAS28466GB on sale at £399 http://www.washingmachinereviews.org.uk/bosch/bosch-was28466gb-washing-machine/

I thought this was a good price as I had seen this machine online in the £500 category, and the price included overnight delivery installation + removal of my broken washer. The lady who sold it confirmed that although Miele were in fact the best, Bosch were also quality and this model was german made, built to last, so after a bit of consideration I took the plunge.

It’s arriving tommorow, so theirs no turning back now, but I’m still uncertain whether I’ve made a the right choice, my main concern being that I want a machine that is built to last a decent length of time above all else. If it lasts 6 years I’d be happy, 10 years great, any above that fantastic, but I don’t want to keep shelling out every 2 – 3 years for cheaply made machines that are built to break. Have I made a wise choice, or should I have tried to find another Miele.

You have made the switch from a “never in stock, always weeks wait, messed up payments etc” , To a Local independent specialist,
You have already made the right choice!
    Good on ya.

Yeah I would have gone local from the off, but I couldn’t find a local Miele dealer where I am.

What does concern me though is whether the machine / model I’ve purchased is well built, or if its going to be in for costly repairs 2 years down the line and eventually conk out, but again got to trust the local dealer on that. I’ve read in the last 10 minutes that big drums could comprimise reliability, and this model has an 8kg drum. I haven’t found any bad info for this machine, so think positive, hoping it was a safe buy.

I guess I’m looking for a bit of reassurance on this front, from those in the know.

Machine is decent enough – at least the tub is servicable if the bearings ever do fail. Carbon brush drive motor, so they will wear out at about 3 years. This is a maintenance job, rather than a failure.

Little chance that the machine will see 18 years I’m afraid…….

Ok machine has arrived, and has completed its first wash without any issues, so all is well. I guess only time will tell how long it will last, but it appears to be well made, washes quietly, and was impressed with how the clothes came out.

Anyway 2 issues. The instruction manual that came with the machine doesn’t have any english in it whatsoever, in fact it may have not been the manual as it was just like a quick user guide in another language. Perhaps they forgot the manual, I’ve no idea.

Can I download the manual from Bosch’s website, I tried typing in WAS28466GB/18 (the code on the machine inside door) but it didn’t work, so don’t know what the correct code is?

Second issue is the beeping noise after the wash, can it be turned of? I’ve read it can, but not sure how?

    Many Thanks 😀

Ring Bosch on the number supplied with your paperwork and they should send you out a new instruction manual free of charge and this will also have instructions on how to turn off the beep .
    Note that it isn’t really a manual….more of a pamphlet .

As to your question on longevity and machine life , these appliances are a new design and have only been on the market for less than 2 years so any long term probs havn’t shown yet…..and there’s not any major faults showing with them in the short term yet !!!

Thanks I’ve sent Bosch an email asking for a manual, although I heard the manuals pretty rubbish anyway.

I was just wondering as well if anyone knows the difference between the model I’ve purchased and the newer WAS28469GB, which seems to have replaced it over the last few months. I can’t see any difference from the specification or the way it looks, it looks to be the same machine?

check the back of the machine.

Bosch tape their manuals to the back! must be german logic!
