Had a call from a lady customer today. She has a noisy White Knight dryer and wanted advice over the phone as to my opinion to what the noise was and how she could fix it herself.

My answer was that she should let me come out and give her my opinion and that would cost her at least £20 for an estimate and if she wants it fixed… £40 plus VAT plus whatever parts are needed.

    She hung up.

Four hours later, she rings me back all sheepish. She had phoned another local repairer with the same request and he had suggested taking the back off and testing the belt tension…

He forgot to mention that it’s a dangerous place in the back of an appliance. She spent all afternoon in the casualty department having her finger sewn back on. OUCH!!!
She only caught her finger between the belt and the motor shaft while her brother spun the drum by hand…

    Sad really…

    yes, but poignant

horses for courses as they say

experience counts for an awful lot in any trade, and people often forget that we’ve been foin the job for 20+ years

safety should always be paramount, and u did the right thing, sometimes i wonder if its worth havin it sewn up in a corgi sort of way, to stop people messing

people forget costs for advertising, vehicle costs (livery, insurance, tax, mot, servicing, fuel) the telephone line, the mobile, van stock,v.a.t , income tax, bank charges etc, etc

then they whinge at £20 for a quote

    laughable really

In a sad sort of a way she deserved it, dosn’t it just show what a sad ignorant society we live in today? Perhaps if more people do it they may value us more?
You did the right thing by giving no advice, i do the same and its very rare thet i’ll give advice on the public forum, i’ll leave that to the diplomatic ones that can deal with the stupidity of the general public, but i will and do give any advice i can in the trade forum for fellow tradespeople. 🙂

That said did anyone catch the topic on yesterdays Radio 2 Jeremy Vine lunchtime show ?

He had people ringing in who were saying that they fixed thier own appliances and did not want to pay for the services of an engineer, they were advocating fixing washing machines, dryers, fridges and I think microwaves !

At no time did I hear any words of caution about Health & Safety or the dangers present in any of these appliances and found the whole subject to be a real can of worms aired publically. It was irresponsible for this topic to take place like this and from listening to the people who contributed to the feature they were novices and how many listening would think Yeah, you know I could do that as well.

I emailed the show and pointed out the possible implications of the feature and guess what ? No response,

Just as a matter of interest has there ever been a reported instance in the public forums of anyone being injured whilst carrying out a DIY repair.

Reading this post makes me think of all sorts of nasty scenarios and I doubt telling them to make sure the power is off will help if the machine falls on them , they pull the wrong plug out of the socket , switch off the wrong switch etc. Suppose we`ve all done that ourselves but we can test before and after we touch anything.

Don`t want this to be taken the wrong way but I certainly wouldn`t want to be the person having given out the advice if someone is injured following a little bit of guidance on the forums.

I could believe the guy who was fixing his own electric shower after he was getting shocks of it 😯 Jeremy kept advising him to get a pro. in to sort it and make it safe but yhe guy was having none of it 😥 the guy won’t even be able to sit and ponder in jail after he kills the wife and kids, hope she has the common sense to get it and him sorted 😉

As an extra to the title of this subject, can I suggest that we all don’t leave part no’s of parts we have fitted to appliances with the customer, it’s so easy for Joe public to go onto the internet and get a price. I am chalenging one now, I fitted a Bosch oven element just before Xmas, she rang me on the 22nd so I was under pressure to get one for her (the oven had been faulty for TWO months) I managed to get one albeit I had to pay a courier charge on a single item. Repaired the cooker on Xmas eve, it was a genuine part, and 5 quid cheaper than Bosch .
They are now contesting the price of the part because the son got onto the net and found one cheaper, she thought I was making to much money on it!!!! Chinese family with a restraunt, I asked her how much they buy and sell prawns for in their business :rolls: . Up to press I have not recieved a penny, just because I left to much info 😕 no doub’t go to the small claims 😥 where they will learn a lesson 😈

Gegsy was savagely attacked by a computer and has had to have a finger re-built – nuts, bolts, titanium implants, the lot.

    Sorry, too much information……….
