ParticipantThe time has come, the walrus said! And he was right. It is time for me to retire and say goodbye. I am taking the opportunity to get away slightly earlier than I originally planned, but what the heck, you must take these opportunities when they present themselves.
I have been in the industry for 47 years and, some will say I should have gone long ago, I feel the time is right. I would like to thank all the friends I have made over the years and I will enjoy reminiscing, as old folks do, about the good times we have had.
It is unfortunate that some of my friends are no longer with us but I still remember their generosity, and the valuable advice, gratefully received.
There are so many people that have helped me during my working life that I cannot name them all, for which I expect you will be very grateful, but they know who they are, and I truly value their friendship.
It is amazing how things have progressed over the years, not always for the better. It maybe old fashioned but I think there is a lot to be said for starting in the service industry on the workbench, repairing small appliances and vacuum cleaners. I know that it in most cases it is not economical to do small appliances but they were a great way to understand the basics. There was tremendous satisfaction when servicing an old Hoover vacuum cleaner, greasing the bearings and cleaning the whole appliance, and when the job was complete it would sound so sweet.
It is now time to put away my wind up megger, I expect there are many of you that will have never used one, I mean a megger with a wind up handle, not that you do not use one at all, and concentrate on my golf handicap, among other activities that in which I want to become involved.
It is with regret that I shall not meet with the guys again but I will not miss dealing with the awkward customers who think they know everything, but actually know nothing, or hitting service targets and maintaining budgets.
Thank you to all of you who know me, it has been a great journey, and to those that do not, just be grateful. My last working day will be 31st December 2014. Look out 2015, I am on the loose.
Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Yeh, good luck with the retirement.
I’m of a similar age (67) and have been on appliances since 73,have things changed or what, I did intend to pull the plug at 65 but have found that I enjoy working a bit as I can mostly choose where and when, I have done a fair bit of commercial stuff and find that suits me, especially now, and have just renewed my f-gas for another 5 years, I’ll have a re think at 72 🙂 .
Helps keep me fit too.December 2, 2014 at 2:42 pm #422228Alex

Richard.
At last! We are about the same age, and I suppose about time too, but I never thought you would finally do it.
We go back a long way, we cut our teeth on 3224/3226 Keymatics, Hoover Juniors and of course twin-tubs. Then we all went “foreign” with the L-2, S128, 218 then the good old Washcraft 918/919 etc. My how times have changed!
We used to meet at the bar in the good old Zanussi days when there were the meetings with Alan Steward, John Dugdale, George Dorman (I think) and other names from Caversham Road whom I have long since forgotten.
I remember with affection the “gang of four” at meetings, Phil Dill and I endeavoured to keep the momentum flowing.
I’m glad you took the plunge. I went my own way nearly two years ago, my golf has improved dramatically, my piece of mind has improved, there is no such thing as stress, and every day is a Saturday.
All the best, and if you are ever this way, give me a nudge on this site and I’ll buy you a drink.
