ParticipantHad an email from my brother yesterday; his washing machine broke down about the same time mine did — and he doesn’t want to spend more than 200 quid.
I gave him the standard spiel about devices with moving parts needing to be well engineered etc etc and to go to 300 quid, but he won’t have it.
Taking things as read that he will not go to 300 pounds, I’ve been looking around for a good deal. He’d originally been offered a SECOND-HAND Indesit washer/dryer for £200 (out of warranty), and I told him not to bother — everything I’ve read about them is not good, and without a warranty it’s too much of a risk to my eyes.
I can’t really decide which of these strategies is the best one — all have their positives and negatives:
1) Get a Beko — they are the cheapest, he can put £50 aside for OOW repairs, and the parts are cheap. That latter point wins it for me, because I don’t see that much difference in quality between these units and so cheap parts plus cash in pocket may well be the best strategy under the circumstances.
2) End-of-line Whirlpool or Zanussi/Tricity from an internet supplier with discount — these seem to be the most reliable of the lower-end brands, but the parts seem ridiculously expensive looking at a (slightly out of date) trade list I happen to have here. I thought that my LG was bad — Whirlpool seem even worse, and that’s despite being both cheaper to buy and less technically sophisticated. Still, as they will effectively be £250 units with cash off, reliability should in theory be better.
3) Gorenje — these intrigue me. An up-and-coming brand that has worked with Bosch, with what seem to be quite cheap parts and that two-year warranty (again seemingly backed up by the Bosch company). That warranty is very powerful on such cheap product — but are they as good as seems to be implied? Again these are £250+ machines normally, but are available for £205-210 from a few online suppliers.
I know this question has been asked a thousand times before, but which of the three general strategies would people tend to go for under the circumstances?
From my point of view I’m pretty much set on a £450 Miele (and will order one if my conversation with LG’s service agents prove fruitless), but that doesn’t help my bro much 😆

Gorenje first – we sell them, not a bad budget machine assuming you get the cheap WA61111, not too good to work on if you have a major fault such as a bearing change, two year guarantee. Or – ISE2 better to work on with independent support, cheap parts and at the same money and guarantee.
End of line – I guess you have already answered this yourself. (parts are expensive)
Finally, Miele a nice machine, technical information non existant so you have to use a Miele dealer. Parts out of this world expensive – consider an ISE10.March 10, 2008 at 7:54 am #245353admin

Not quite so..they have no connection with Bosch,The service is provided by independent engineers like ourselves.
How about the ISE 2 which would be a far better option,2 year warranty and cost of spares oow is realistic.

Hold on a sec — isn’t the ISE2 £300?
And the ISE10 some astronomical figure like £800 or something?
£300 for the cheaper unit ain’t gonna happen — neither is £800 for mine frankly — and the ISE5 is made in Turkey and for reasons I’ve already mentioned I’m not willing to take a punt with 500 quid — I don’t trust Turkish appliances with good money no matter how well recommended they are. The ‘2 yes, since it’s £300 (and I’d consider the ’10 were it in my price range) — but I’m sure that the Miele is a better unit than the ISE2 anyway.
This all said — I was doing some fag-packet calculations re the LG — and it turns out that if I had had a Miele during the time I had the LG, I’d have needed around 4500 wash cycles — pretty much the length of time these units are specified to run for. So the LG did not do badly to be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} reliable through that timescale.
Would I have another LG? Not sure. The service I’ve had from this one is borderline good IMO.
I do not have an ISE sales agent within 100 miles of my home — and in any case the 5 is the only machine that falls into the price ranges I have specified, and yet this is the only one you guys haven’t mentioned 😆
Bear in mind that I am a tight Northern git who won’t spend more than he has to on anything!!
Can someone at least punch a hole in my “Beko vs the world” scenario — experience suggests that Beko machines are no better or worse than any other budget make, and the spares are reasonable. I’ve done a couple of silly fixes on them as well (spring, carbons) and wasn’t swearing and shearing my knuckles, so they seem OK to work on from my POV as well!

The ISE 5 falls out of your £250 budget which is why it has not been mentioned, the ISE2 however does come within your £250 budget if purchased locally,Have you asked if there is a new dealer that hasnt been updated yet on the web site..what is the postcode where it needs to go to ?

Really? Hmmm, interesting, very interesting.
The Postcode is DL5 7LQ.
If you can point me in the direction of an ISE2 for £250 (I’ll stick it in the back of the car and fit it myself if needs be), I’ll most probably take one!

Sorry, it does not work like that. To comply with our gaurantee and our insurers AXA, all ISE machines have to be ‘correctly’ installed by one of our agents.

Failing that I’ve just had a “bwah-hah-hah-hah” moment: Beko £160 special plus 5-year warranty from these chaps:
http://www.warrantyex.co.uk/domestic-ap … rance.html
(Underwritten by Domestic & General).
Let them deal with the fallout when the unit explodes in a fireball lol.
Total cost £255, and a back-up plan in case the ISE2 is a no-go.

Only mentioned it to keep the price down.
The budget was £200 — I can probably squeeze £250 but no more out of my bro.

Thankyou very much.
I will have a word with Mr Whitehead today. Northallerton is a bit distant, but not massively so.
Thanks for your help 🙂

ParticipantBeko
My sister who is on a low income bought a Beko WMA510 Machine from Grattan Catalogue at Christmas. We paid for the matching condensor dryer for her as well as extended warranties from Domgen. (I paid just over £50 for both warranties.) She paid £155 for the washer plus £25 delivery charge, which came direct from Beko within 2 days. Ok it only has a 1000 spin speed but she is happy with it, it is simple to use & she likes it.
Irony is when my own Whirlpool washer quit my insurance company would only replace my washer with a Beko and the snob in me said NO. I wanted something could stand a bit of hammering because of my hubby’s kidney failure. Instead I bought a Miele, which has been nothing short of a pain in the arspects because of some calibration sensor do-dah that keeps going wrong & needs Mr Miele’s PC whatsit to put it right. Like you, I did consider an ISE as my postcode is NE & there was nobody in my area to assist, which is why I went to John Lewis’s in town.
Hope you get sorted m8.
