Anyone know where I can get loose carbon brush to fit all those zanussi, candy idesit machines?
Approx size is 14mm x 5 x 32
Why pay for holders etc. when I can solder in new brushes?

You cannot be serious Neil? Carbon brushes with copper tails are spot welded to their fixings within each holder. Holders wear as badly as the brushes within them anyway. Coupled with the fact that carbons brush kits are cheap and readily available anywhere so what is there for you to gain by messing around with them I wonder? 😕

Useful when, having travelled miles, you need a brush that you have ran out of.
Can’t say I have ever noticed wear to the housings of this kind of brush. and its a relatively simple task to solder the new brush pigtail to a short section of the old pigtail.
Have done this many times when I have had the ‘right’ brush and holder but the brush is facing the wrong way, never had any problems.So it would be useful to have a supply of loose brushes available to get the job done 1st visit when the situation demands.

Oh I know where you’re coming from Neil and it’s gutting to find of all the brushes you’ve got on your van the pair you need just ain’t there! 🙁

Then do take a closer look as very often the copper/bronze housing gets burnt up and damaged. 😉

It’s a bodge Neil no matter how you wish to describe it, it’s still a BODGE. And perhaps you may have overlooked the specific compound a carbon brush is made up of? The hardness level varies from motor to motor as does the laminations some brushes incorporate.
You mentioned Candy and Indesit? Now what similarity do their motor brushes have I wonder? I have 4 different Candy brushes on my van and no way do the carbons have any size, shape or potential hardness compatibily to Indesit brushes, they don’t!
And what about the springs eh? The springs are subjected to a degree of heat levels that eventually wear them down as well. For example, a 7 year old Candy’s brushes are well knacked by the time they need replacing but cobbling a new brush into a tired housing and a clapped out spring is not an option, is it, what do you reckon?
I repeat, it’s a bodge, a cop-out to get you out of trouble, a first fix call-out charge, job done….yeah right. :rolls: And if you get a recall next week on the job, then what?….I wonder?

Martin, I am shocked that my name and the Bodge word have appeared on the same page.. 😯
I care passionately about my customers, doing a good job and a long lasting repair.
Do you think I’m mad? I am busy enough already without the hassle of call backs for ‘bodged’ jobs which would be covered by my guarantee anyway. I would pack up tomorrow if I didn’t think I was doing my best by my customers, and yes getting there machine going when they are desperate is a part of that.
However I take on board what you say, and I have spoken to my friend Kash at connect and negotiated a good (better than internet) price for a Large selection of Brush and Holders, in addition to what I carry already.
I would like to learn more about carbon brush composition, laminations etc. hardness etc. Do you have any references I could study?

The fact is that wear to the holders can be easily ascertained by inspection and feel with a new brush in place…something i do as a matter of course when swapping brushes within holders and i have to say the number of holders i’ve condemned is very very few.
As to being the wrong grade or compound of carbon, yes you have a point but if it means the brush will last only six years instead of eight well quite frankly i can live with that, and so do my customers.
The springs do suffer from the heat sometimes and in those situations i can usually find another spring to replace the original.
On the whole Martin, yes i’d rather fit a new holder and brush every time, but to replace the brush alone can be and is a perfectly acceptable repair.

Hoover P55 brushes and the red Indesit brushes have the same sleeve and brush, but fit into different plastic holders.
Useful on a Saturday afternoon…….

None!……..I’ve never ever managed it, the two types I tried fitting to the old end frame were a right old BODGE, so I never ever fitted one to a machine. I always but always replace with the genuine Bosch Motor End Housing complete. (They are all fitted with the new type brush holders anyway, very nice they are, proper job. 8) )
