    Hi there,

I’ve got a Haieir washing machine that keeps blowing its cartridge fuse when it is powered on.

When I plug it into the power line everything is fine. However, when I press the power on button the cartridge fuse blows. For some strange reason the motor seems to power on for half a second before it happens.

What sort of steps can I take to diagnose this issue? I’ve included the wiring diagram below.

Thank you for your help 🙂

well for start I would find the motor and heater and unplug them. I am only guessing here but I am thinking motor control problem

then using a 3 amp fuse not 13 amp see if it blows

all machine should power up and start a programme with a 3 amp fuse its only when a heater comes on or the motor is loaded should it be a problem

you do realise you have one of the worst machines on the market

That wiring diagram doesn’t refer to it having a heater and the fuse is rated only at 5 amp. Most odd, unless you live in Oz maybe?

didn’t see that, never seen a machine with a 5A fuse, well spotted Martin

we have enough mould problems with 30 degree washes would hate to see what its like with no heat

to add to my above post, you can now ignor the heater but with only a 5A fuse it will not take much to blow it

when you say the motor does a quick turn does it seem to be a violent type of movement like its trying to go full speed instantly. if so then it sound like the motor control on the main board is faulty probably an item called a Triac. If the motor starts without control it will draw enough current to pop a 5A fuse. so as said previously unplug motor as a quick test and try it again

    Hi Dave and Martin,

    Thank you for your help.

I disconnected the motor and the machine started fine so it seems likely that it is the Triac as you explained.

Is it worth performing further diagnostics or better to just replace the main board?

    Thank you.

The main suspect is the motor. So time to remove it and inspect for burnt and charred armature segments and brush holders.

The main circuit board also can be damaged but only if the motor has caused it (chain reaction).

All of the above and it being a Haier are bad news. 🙁

Do you live down under by the way?
