ParticipantHello lovely forum folks, long time lurker, first time questioner..
So my Haier washing machine (yes I know, we inherited it with the house!) has apparently developed a habit of diving into a high speed spin at random times during the wash cycle, and before doing the slower speed distribution spins. If this is during the actual spin cycle, that’s not too bad, but it’s done its couple of times when the drum has actually been full of water and unbalanced clothes. As you can imagine, it made a bit of a noise as it tried to walk out of the kitchen..
I’ve recently taken to babysitting the cycle with a finger on the main on/off button to catch it quickly before it can do too much damage.
I’m assuming this is simply a controller board issue, but just wondering whether you lot had any views on this, or indeed to be of some use to anyone else who might have the same thing going on.
In fact, it’s all pretty academic as it’s probably going to be replaced soon, it’s had a good life and is due for retirement, so I think it’s done it’s last wash cycle anyway (even if it did do it wrong) so it’s really more of a curiosity than anything at this point.
Cheers!

The tacho generator on the motor (fitted on the end opposite the drive pulley) is the trouble. Either the connections to it are broken, the magnet has failed or the coil is open circuit.

Thanks Martin, is that the part that also regulates the speed of the motor? Reason I ask is that it does seem to remain regulated – it’s not that it’s running away with itself when it does spin, and it can still do a slow spin if needed.
When it does kick in, I’m hearing the usual ‘click’ from the controller, as though it’s instructing the motor to do something, but maybe this is something else? It’s as though the controller is correctly say ‘OK, fast spin now’, and it does, it’s just that it’s doing it out of sequence.

The program controller ultimately dictates to the tacho generator the speed it wants the motor to rotate. The tacho generator feeds back the generated voltage requirement the controller is asking for. The two work hand in hand to operate a smooth transition between the various speeds needed (i e. Tumble, distribution speed in the ramp up to slow and fast spin).
Most commonly when irratic speeds are produced the fault is centred toward the tacho rather than the controller. Therefore I suggest you start there first before concluding any blame on the controller.
