Handle on AEG double oven

We have an AEG D4101-4 stainless steel oven and the handle of the top oven gets very hot in use. This is down to, what is supposed to be, the cooling fan blowing very hot air straight onto it.

…which says the temperature limit for a metal handle is 35 degrees above ambient as opposed to 60 for others, ours gets up to 57 above. We have queried this with both AEG and Trading Standards who both quote the 60 degree limit, can anyone shed more light on this.

Also, should the cooling fan be blowing air this hot anyway.

Yeah I can.

Bear in mind that the 35C is ABOVE the ambient temperature of the room. So if the room is at 22C then it is within the legislation, albeit just. If it’s 57C over ambient then there’s a problem if the handle is made from metal.

I would suggest that AEG and TS re-read the sheet from BSI as that is the current legislation.

However, any manufacturer will most likely insist that the appliance is temperature checked with a calibrated thermostat for accuracy before taking any action on it.

You also have to take account of the installation as, most likely, about 70{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the calls we get for burning units or overheating are down to poor installation and that would not be covered under the terms of the warranty. Some manufacturers accept such calls but many do not and I do not know what AEG’s position on it is. This could be a reason why the air is hot off the cooling fan although, to be fair, the whole point is to remove heat from teh cavity and to cool the fascia and handle so there will be some heat there.

If you’re not sure the best thing to do is to get an engineer in to test it and, when you book the call, tell them that you need a temperature test carried out so that time is allowed and the proper equipment is onboard with the engineer to do it.

The installation should be fine, we had a ServiceForce rep in, via AEG, to fix a problem with the door on a D2100-4 that we had originally and he was happy with it. AEG then replaced it themselves with this model. The original oven also had this problem but we put it down to the badly fitting door.

Trading Standards did a temperature check this morning but as I said claimed, as it was within 60 degrees above, it was fine albeit agreeing that it was too hot for comfort. The reading was indeed 57 over ambient.

Would you happen to have a ref number for the BSI info so I can quote that at them?

I’m beginning to believe it’s a design or general manufacturing fault to happen on two different, albeit related, models. I think the non stainless versions have a plastic handle and would therefore be fine by the legislation.

The 60 degree limit, + Ambient, is correct because this model was designed before the revised B.S were issued, therefore complies with the old Standards. Any product which is of a new design since the Standards were revised, must conform to the new standards. Therefore TS and AEG are correct.
