Help! I have followed your advice on using Aeriel washing powder only and ensuring coloureds are separated from whites etc. However, since I stopped using a fabric conditioner, I have noticed that the clothes have become quite hard feeling especially when compared with clothes that were washed some time ago that feel nice and soft. In a recent thread regarding conditioner, you pursuaded me that it was better not to use conditioner and so far I have followed this advice. Can anyone suggest what I should probably do?

Try doing an extra rinse & spin cycle to see if it makes a difference. It could be you have a partially blocked filter and it’s not draining fully between rinses. If your machine has a super rinse or higher water level facility you can also try that.

I have cleaned the filter only recently and also ensured the drain line was clean too. I have tried the extra rinsing, but the clothes are still quite hard when they were not this way when we used fabric conditioner.

    Hi lomax,

Clothes feel softer with the more water you use to rinse with, including the volume, as well as how much you basically knock them around. So, more agitation, the softer and the more water the softer.

Trouble is, the more water you use the less environmentally friendly the process is and, the more agitation the more damage you do to the fibres.

So you see, it’s a trade off really.

But in essence it’s all about the rinsing from what I can gather. The more water, the better the result but, the more water, the more you’re killing the planet.

The alternative of course is that you use an artificial way to separate the fibres to make them feel soft, conditioner of some sort in other words.

    K.
