How much flexibility do companies have when doing repairs for the council? The current trend is to modernise with an eye on being more environmental and energy saving, but when a new kitchen was fitted by the council a few years ago, I asked if I could pay any necessary extra for them to install mixer taps instead, and they said no,even though it would save water over the old single taps.

Similarly when they install a new combi boiler, and if I wanted, could I request it be In the kitchen if possible rather than the bedroom would they be able to do that? They seem insistent on the bedroom cupboard (that’s where a gas pipe is I think) but will I still be able to use it as a wardrobe and store stuff in there (they always tell you not to put anything in the airing cupboard but most people ignore that). Thanks.

the companies doing it are on fixed prices etc. even though you would pay it would cost to source the extra parts etc. its a lot simpler to fit the same kitchen in every house. Makes sourcing and ordering a lot easier

If the house is owned by the Council so they get to decide how things are done. If they allowed people to change things by paying for ‘upgrades’ etc then what would happen if those upgrades needed maintenance? For example, the mixer tap that you paid for, but they installed, breaks – who should pay the labour for that to be fixed as it’s not the Council’s fault that the tap you have supplied has failed so why should they pay to mend it? But if you pay for someone to come in and fix it and they botch the repair and flood the house then who pays to fix that mess?
It all gets too complicated which is why they won’t allow it.
