I’ve been collecting our scrap and channeling it correctly for some time now much to the dismay of the local flat bed transit van crews that “will take it for free”. Each time they ask i explain why they cant take my end of life appliances away to the local scrappie.
I find now that the three major scrap processors in my area will still take appliances and want no numbers or paper work and wouldn’t know what to give me if i did want some proof of it’s disposal other than the receipt for the money you get.
Is it just taking a while to catch on? Surely the scrap yards would be the first people to be told whats what?
    Has anyone else found this?

I use one of the biggest scrap /recyclers in East anglia ,When I phoned to ask were they a collection point for WEEE product ,they said of course they are ,great says I, I will bring all the numbers for documentation with me .
You don’t need it was the reply ,after a conversation it became apparent they have no idea either.
    So roll on DHL .
something tells me it will get worse before it gets better though .

Roll on DHL. What is DHL?. To be honest, I havent a clue what is going on, or what I am supposed to do. I take some machines to my local scrapyard. They usually just bung you a couple of quid, mostly give no paperwork, although rarely a receipt is given. There is also a localre cycling firm for electricals, called Unplugged, which is run as a charity. They give no receipt, and claimed they have paid £500 to be exempt from WEE. A local Whitegoods member has registered as an official collection point and says I can deposit machines with him, which is very kind, but his premises is about 12 miles away, and I dont really want to spend my days hauling scrap metal all over the county. Can anyone tell me exactly what I should be doing? I probably sell less than 2 machines a week on average, so I dont want to be spending megga money on disposal, or it becomes less than wothwhile. Help! Neptune

    Hi Neptune,

You need to show that you dispose of the machines correctly with an auditable paperwork trail, a real PITA. 🙁

Best to speak to John about it TBH, he’s the WEEE Guru. 😉 😆

It is my understanding that one of my options would be not join, and to take back machines on a one-for-one basis. However one needs to register ones intention not to join {how, where?] and to take old appliances to an approved collection point. How do I find out where that is? Any help appreciated Neptune

If you sell goods that are listed you must offer some form of take-back by law now, be that in-store or through a retailer take back scheme such as Valpak. There is no option not to join if you sell appliances or any goods that fall under the scope of WEEE.

Basically, so far as I am aware, there is no exemption.

Hi Kwatt and thanks for your reply. What I actually meant was, Provided that I take old machines back from the customer and take them to an approved collection point, do I still need to subscribe to Valpak?

Yes as you need to prove the paper trail and they provide that.

Not selling directly myself I haven’t taken much notice of the WEEE thing. I am confused though. I was sort of under the assumption that sellers had to take an old appliance back free of charge and that the manufacturers would have to foot the bill. Is this not the case? If not, what is the point of it?

So does a seller have to take the old one away free of charge or not?

You either have to do in-store takeback as they call it or you have to be a member of a retailer scheme, like Valpak, so you can advice the customer how to dispose of the product.

Re: Has WEEE affected anyone yet?

Thanks K. Sorry for being under-speed on this one. I know it’s been covered a lot. I just assumed the whole point was to make manufacturers and retailers pay. People makeing or selling good stuff shouldn’t have to pay anything and people (nameless) who make stuff that’s not lasting should have to pay so much that it would be cheaper for them to spend the money improving their products.

It all sounds like a wasted opportunity. I heard somewhere that charges go on weight so that the best quality products have to pay more!

Yep, it’s based on the weight into the market so, the heavier the goods, the more you pay.

    TBH it’s a bit of a farce.
