ParticipantI have read the Announcements and Self Hekp sections before posting 😀
This is a heavily used dishwasher that must be 18+ years old.
The upper spray arm does not turn.I’ve taken it out thorughly cleaned and inspected and visually it looks ok.
It does turn by hand so I removed the arm from the machine and passed water through it with a hosepipe.
The water flows through all of the outlets freely but the arm does not turn.
Is it possible to test an upper spray arm in this way?Has it simply got old and there’s too much friction being caused.
This is what the arm looks like

Thanks for looking 😀

Insufficient water pressure from circulating pump may mean the impeller has got clogged with debris OR has split. Circulating pump strip-down may well be on the cards.

Hi Martin thanks for the prompt reply 😀
I’m sure the spray is not clogged or leaking.
What I’m not sure about is that due to the age of the part and my lack of experience in judging that there’s too much friction for it to turn with water
So is trying to test the spray arm using a hosepipe connect to mains water not a valid idea?

I imagine you have removed and cleaned the top nozzle in the roof of the tub? They often get crudded up.
Testing if there is sufficient flow to the top spray arm best achieved as follows: allow machine to get well into a wash cycle. Switch off, open door and remove top basket completely. Place a washing up bowl onto bottom basket (to catch water from top nozzle) shut door, turn back on. After 30 seconds running all the water in the bottom of the tub should now be in the bowl. 😉
If not you have circulating pump problems. 🙁

Thank you again
I understand that and it sounds like a good idea.
I’ll give it a go! 😀November 3, 2014 at 1:34 pm #421014Bob Ashdown

SORTED! 😀

I had already checked the nozzle and found it to be ok.
Today I had the day off so I took off the right hand side panel and found a blockage in the pipe leading to the nozzle.
It was a stone from a plum! 😀Thanks very much Martin for steering me in the right direction and not wasting time with my hosepipe test 😆
Hopefully my ageing dishwasher will be saved from the landfill for a little bit longer
