ParticipantI’ve got an old Zanussi series 600 washer (1992) that I bought in France when I lived there, that worked nicely when I moved back to the UK, and now sits in my basement here in the USA. It recently stopped emptying (the pump was clattering badly), so when I was back in the UK this year, I purchased a replacement pump and installed it, however I still have a problem that the machine will not empty.
1. The new pump turns correctly under power when out of the unit.
2. The machine empties correctly ok by placing the drain hose at floor level, so no blockages.
3. I set up a test by tipping up the machine and feeding water into it via the filter, and the pump will empty the water fed in. It just won’t empty the water from the drum when its upright.Any suggestions appreciated

Hi
It could be the sump hose has a blockage.
The sump hose is the big black hose from the tub to the filter , have a feel along it , socks often get caught there.

Checked that, no luck. This could be a case of my amateurish installation.
1. I’ve posted a picture of the pump as i reinstalled it. Could somone check and tell me if its upside down etc. http://www.geocities.com/ncsoft/zanussi/pump.jpg
2. As the connecter was different on the pump than the old one, I had to cut the wires off and attach them to a new plug – purple for live, white for neutral – is that ok.
3. The clear plastic tube that is attached to the housing was caught and pulled tight. Whats this for?TIA

Pump looks fine, connections OK and the clear tube will likely be the air tube to the Pressure Switch near the top controls!

Thanks for checking that.
I ran through the tests again, filled the machine with cold, then ran an empty. I can hear/feel the pump definitely vibrating, possibly turning, but no water is emptying. If I empty the machine into a bucket while the pump is running, it’s definitely just gravity working, but when the machine is nearly empty, I hear the ‘whooshing’ sound that I would expect and it feels like the pump is definitely turning.
Any suggestions?

Looking at the pump housing on this Zanussi you need a drain pump mod part number 50247950004 this is a askoll pump kit that replaces the old sole pump
Hope this helps

Not a button/coin in drain hose acting like a shutoff valve when pump is operating? If that pump worked the new one should too.

Hi Mark the photo of the old pump is a plaset so the pump you have now fitted (Askoll) should work ok as the last post suggests look for restrictions like a coin

I checked the hose, (took it off the machine and ran a 75mm copper pipe through it). No blockage
I’ve taken the pump off again and checked that it turned ok with power. That’s ok, but I’m surpised how noisy it is.
I reassembled it, and it appears to be able to drain, but only if the hose is about 12” or less off the floor.
Is it possible that this pump is faulty? Or another crazy idea i’ve had is that it can’t deal with the altitude here (I live at 5000m).

Have you tried running water through the drain hose at mains pressure?
It’s a possibility the pipe may have a plug of broken scale that has turned into sludge. It’s surprising but you can push a stick or pipe through it and think it’s clear but once you start pumping water through it the plug reforms and creates a blockage.

Replaced the hose, no help. The pump definitely does not seem to be ejecting water at any decent pressure.
I’ve uploaded a wave file (about 40 seconds) of the machine trying to empty. At this point the machine is emptying into a bucket. at about 25 secs the machine has emptied, you can hear the change in sound. The microphone is right by the pump.

Mike,
How are you powering the machine? UK/Euro voltage is 230/240v.Penguin45.
