ParticipantI have a (quite old) smeg a2 which has developed a problem switching the various elements of the main fan. Currently only the last option (11 oclock position) on the selector is functioning (the circular back element and fan).
I’ve taken a video of the behaviour … here: https://youtu.be/glJiR0rks_M
(with the audio on you can tell the oven is only functioning on the last setting)I thought it was probably the selector switch, so I bought what I thought was the replacement part. Once it arrived however I realised it was different to the original part. I also checked the original switch and all seemed to look ok (I didn’t actually test continuity because I didn’t have a meter to hand, but contacts looked good and there was nothing noticably wrong with the switch).
So I’m wondering:1, what is the most likely cause? (apart from the selector switch I’m thinking thermostats/safety cutoff, but not sure where to start) 2, if the selector, how can I find out which part number I need (spares websites all seem to have different part numbers!)

I’d say switch was iffy but make sure you get the correct version of the A2, there’s several.
Wrong switch in it… it won’t work.
But without knowing what switch you’ve gotten, what version it is, it’s not possible to say much more.

Thanks for taking a look!
I’m quite confused about which version I need. Do you know how to tell? This is the ID plate on the oven: https://imgur.com/a/vjuP1 which says it is an A2 – 2DA. The switch I bought is this one: https://www.espares.co.uk/product/es159 … tor-switch but the pin combinations were very different.
Many thanks again for your help!

No idea what eSpares supplied as they mask their part numbers so you can’t price compare.
There’s an A2-2 but no A2-2DA.
Assuming it’s an A2-2 then it’s this switch:
https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/8117302 … tor-switch
But there is a note on Smeg that says:
Modifications MC0000000002192
ATTENTION: TO FIT THE NEW COMMUTATOR (WITH A 31.5mm LONG SHAFT), WHICH REPLACES THE OLD COMMUTATOR WITH A 40mm LONG SHAFT, YOU MUST ORDER THE COMMUTATOR EXTENSION SHAFT CODE170290086 (38mm LONG) WHICH MUST BE SNAP-FITTED ON THE EXISTING COMMUTATOR SHAFT P/N 818730278. ONCE THE EXTENSION SHAFT HAS BEEN FITTED, IT’S NECESSARY TO CUT IT TO GET THE PROPER ALIGNEMENT WITH THE KNOBS.If you mail me a photo of the rating plate to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk I’ll work out what variant it is but my gut feel is you’ve gotten the wrong commutator switch.

Can you see the ID plate here? https://imgur.com/a/vjuP1 If not I’ll stick it in an email.
Model A2 Type 2DA
None of the websites seem to show original part numbers. The ukwhitegoods link for example doesn’t match the p/n from here: https://www.servevastdirect.co.uk/custo … ics/A2.pdf
I think it’s a conspiracy!

Uhm, Servevast also started using their own numbers, same reason.
We **ONLY** show/use the original manufacturer part number wherever possible.
That looks to be an original A2 circa 1999-2001 so uses this switch:
https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/8117301 … tor-switch
And there will be a wiring conversion to it as well required that, if you’ve not done may well have fried the switch or goodness knows what all and, as per the page notes there the supplier should have made you aware I’d have thought. And, supplied the conversion info as appropriate as well.
But, as I said, I’ve no clue what you’ve ordered so I’m not really able to comment as I’ve no idea if it’s right or wrong.

That’s understood and your advice is appreciated. I will send the switch I have back as I’m almost certain it isn’t right. I have seen the conversion document but I never installed the switch since it was so obviously not the same switching pattern (even with the conversion). My concern is just to be confident I’m buying the correct one this time.
Since the current switch also looks undamaged, I’m also slightly dubious that it is the cause of the issue. But if you think that’s the best place to start I will go ahead.
I had assumed that pdf from servevast was an original smeg diagram. Apologies if that’s incorrect – I wouldn’t want to tar this website with the same brush. Original part numbers make things so much easier!
Thanks again,
